Boulder, UT: Pirep Anyone?

Anyone been to Boulder recently? I'm headed down next week and wondering about its condition. How are the edges? Soft?

Thanks,
Cory

Send Chris a PM and have him run over there on his KLR650 :P and have a look. Its been rainy but next week looks beautiful.

I think Chris's handle is Slowhawk. He's your best bet for an 'on the ground' pirep.

Have fun. Thats my favorite part of the state.

I was there in Sept last year.. It was ok. I landed at mid field on the NW runway. The center of the runway was rough, I landed on the right side. As other people have said, people park in the airplane parking area. I hiked the boulder mail trail, it was nice..

Yeah I've been in touch with Chris. He said he'd check it out if he had time.

Jason, how long did it take you to do the hike?

Re: Boulder, UT: Pirep Anyone?

Hey Cory,

OK, so went for a ride today and checked out the Boulder zone. The runway is soft with the recent rain, but safe for 8.50's and up and will hopefully firm up as it dries. As Jason mentioned, there is a pretty good rut centerline that is worst the mid 1/3 of the field, no problem for bushwheels, but i would not want to get in there with my 8.50's. So landing NW (30) stay to the right of center and you should be good.

Threshold 30, several ruts, i would plan to touch down 50-75 yards beyond this point

Looking NW (RW 30) Hard to tell from this picture but ruts are left, stay to the right of center

Midfield ruts

Hope that helps, be safe.

Thanks Chris. We appreciate that. Looks like we will need to rethink it as I'm still on small tires for a few more weeks. Maybe we will see you at Escalante if you are around.

Re: Boulder, UT: Pirep Anyone?

I spent one night out camping. We moved pretty fast. Almost think it would be better to spend 2 nights out. We actually met some women at the end of the hike that offered to take us back to boulder, which worked out well... I want to hike back to upper calf creek falls one hot august day and go swimming. Found a really cool swimming hole above the falls. I am thinking it is maybe a 2 mile hike from boulder airstrip.
