Brake caliper/tire clearance
Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?
This is an experimental still under construction. The wheels/brakes are JDM 6", and the tires are Goodyear 8.50s. I am worried about my calipers gouging the tires. I only have about 1/16 clearance. Is that sufficient, or do I need to change something? Can I add a washer or two between the brake rotors and the spacer? That would probably do the trick. Else I can take the caliper over to the belt sander and have at it. I also thought about asking the manufacturer for a slightly thicker spacer, as it is cut from the same extrusion as the wheel center piece. If none of those ideas work out, I could make a thin spacer to go in there. Washers would be the easiest though.
Thanks
Jesse

Jesse, it is an experimental. You can do what you want. When I put bigger rubber on my Maule I had to put a factory spacer kit on. 1/16 is not enough. I have 1/4" and it never touches. Cheers...Rob

Jesse, Last summer I put 31" bush wheels on my 2+2, and had to change from Single piston brakes to duel piston brakes. I used Grove wheels and brakes, and had the same problem. I called Grove and they sent me aluminum 1/8 spacers. They said it was a common problem. They also said not to use washers. I'm not familiar with your brakes, but you might call the manufacturer. I ended up with about 1/4" and thats enough .

Then again two thick washers under each disk at 3 ea. bolts spaces the disk out perfectly for 8.00's on a C-140.

A friend had this problem when he hung some 850's on his 182. he got some spacer rings (I assume Cleveland) to go in between the wheel & rotor. Looked like a better show than washers, don't know if the bearing surface between wheel & rotor counts for anything though.

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!
Spacer rings are available at Merril Field in Anchorage. Maule uses a thick washer.
Cleveland doesn't want to talk about it!

For some reason my email notification for this thread didn't send me anything until today, so I'm just catching up. Thanks for all the replies. It looks like I should shoot for 1/4" clearance, which is kind of what I had in mind, so that's good. My wheels are three piece with 6 through bolts. The rotors are spaced away from the wheel on a spacer made from a section of round extrusion. This extrusion is the same material used to make the wheel center piece. the bolts go through the rotor and spacer and the rest of the wheel. The best solution would be to get a thicker section of that extrusion from the manufacturer, which should be possible, but who knows? I'm working on it.
I think washers would be acceptable between the existing spacer and the wheel face because as-is the spacer only contacts the wheel face at the six bolt locations. Between the bolts the spacer is not touching the wheel at all due to the machined out areas in the wheel between the bolt holes. So it seems like washers would be as strong as a 360* x 1/8" or 3/16" additional spacer. I'm no engineer though. Just an "eyeball" engineer.
Thanks guys.
