Re: Brand New M4?

[-o< So a couple of questions for the knowledgable!!
My friend Jack at home is going to pull the fabric on this and help me get started. Hopefully have all tubing repaired and epoxy coated before I get Home!! [-o<
So I need to know 2 things first off.
1 Who makes the best fusalage envelope with light fabric that will work with Stewarts System. #-o
2 What kind of prop, fixed pitch would the experts recomend for the Franklin? Does not need to be certified. #-o
Should be around 250 - 275HP [-X and will have LOTS of clearance, don't know if the best would be a 3 bladed big paddle prop or long 2 bladed. Rpm should be in the 2800-2900 range.
Thanks in Advance
All comments, advice, and information welcome, :^o

Re: Brand New M4?

You are looking to go experimental with an ex-factory Maule?
Sorry I know this has been done to death elsewhere, but how does that work out with the FAA?

Re: Brand New M4?

are you looking to do a fabric envelope or cover it yourself...I've heard good things about the envelope but doing the fabric yourself or by someone who is good at it is way nicer... and don't know why but whenever I hear the Name Jack I think of the name of a over the line tournament team here in San Diego...'stop the bus and let my brother Jack off."... #-o :D

Re: Brand New M4?

John, Those are the first of the AK wide and tall bush wheels, long before AKBushWheels!!??
The are a 15" mag wheel with a B&M racing slick cut down with most of the rubber off of them, there is an adapter to fit the axle and it has been machined to take a Cleveland disk
They were approved on a few birds, mostly field, OEM products.
Schnieder built them, do not know of anything recent. Only problem with them was the weight, turned a few cubs over if landing to fast. to much mass to get spinning.
Also if you ever landed on a hard survace, which ever WAY YOU WERE POINTED, THAT WAS THE WAY YOU WERE GOING UNTIL STOPPED!!
I'm not sure if I got all of that correct but pretty close I think?? #-o
Not sure which ones I'll use. Those or the Whitaker gear I got from you!!>??

Re: Brand New M4?

The old Schneider racing slicks worked fine, with reasonable pilot technique. You're right, field approved only.

The Maule M-4 has pretty short gear, so unless you're planning to extend the gear, AND install tall tires, you'll want to carefully consider prop length.

Re: Brand New M4?

George - that is what I thought they were. My buddy had some big wide dirt track wheels and tires like that set up on a Wag Aero PA-11. They had to be 15 inches wide and 30 something tall, on aluminum wheels. His didn't seem very heavy. He bolted the two halfs of the cleveland wheels together with the auto wheel squeezed in the middle., so his brake disc, etc was as normal. If you don't ever use that Whittacre gear set-up, I now have a J-3 they would look good on!! Lets see what I have to trade???

Re: Brand New M4?

John, I bet that whitaker gear has flow more in the mail that it ever did on a plane!!
Mike, The Modified 4 will have some tall gear and the very least 31" tires.
Still waiting to hear from someone with some back ground on some of the experimental fixed pitch or adjustable props/
Have a good day
