Budget bush plane. Can it be done?

Sometimes the most fun way to get into the backcountry, Part 103 Ultralights and Light Sport Aircraft have their own considerations.

Down here atleast the UL 98HP engine is about 3 grand cheaper than a 80HP rotax 912. Having said that Im yet to find out just how reliable the UL engines are. There is nothing like sticking with the tried and proven!

Don't forget to consider the costs of ownership too. How long do you intent to run with this "interim solution"?

Some aircraft might cost more to buy, which means more waiting and saving. They might be cheaper to use though, if you can avoid CASA participation (microlight class 2?)
Others might be cheap to buy, but cost an arm + leg to run, and maintain if you are included in the full-blown CASA rigmoral.

I completely agree with you, there is a very big difference between purchasing a plane and owning a plane! this is why I hate the position I'm in, as Its like I'm hitting my head against the wall knowing what I need, and what the benefits are of going that extra step. However no matter what way I look at it, I still need that extra $$$ to make the extra step.

Whatever I look at will be registered in the RAA category so I can remain in hiding from casa. The second hand market over here is just packed Full of jabirus of which I would choose AIDS inplace of buying a Jabiru. one thing I am looking at seriously on the second hand market is the Savannah but I really do want to go tail drager if possible. But that seems to be about the only bush plane on the market over here that doesn't require the sale of majority of your limbs to purchase.

Though one thing I have just thought of is the shipping of aircraft from the states is whats killing off that option, though NZ is packed full of bush planes, might be worth some serious consideration. Can you recommend any good second hand aircraft sites for aircraft over there?

Colt and Tri-Pacer are both excellent buys. I owned a $4500 Colt, and $2500, $5000, and $6500 Tri-Pacers at different times.

Honestly, but the time you've paid for shipping and crating, you might as well have bought in the USA.
It could be cheaper to buy here, if you plan to fly it over The Ditch. But you would need a deal.

We don't really have a website specialising in aircraft, and most of the rags cover Aussie and NZ.
Trademe (Tardme?) is always populated with about 250 aircraft for sale. I guess that's probably the best bet, after word of mouth.

Not really sure what you are getting for shipping quotes but there are deals to be had on LSA type over here in the USA. Lots of 'almost' completed planes that can be bought for very good prices. I picked up a Kitfox IV for my son, but he ended up buying a very nice 170B. This plane could probably be in the air in under a month. Heck, someone that knows these planes could probably do it in a week.
I bought this plane for about the price of a new Rotax 912, and this plane has a 912! I would love to finish this plane myself and keep it but I have to face reality and minimize my amount of projects.

About the best site out here for used, kits, LSA, ultralights, anything aviation, etc. Our county tax accessor actually uses this site to determine value at times for kit planes, etc, but that can cause issues because what is asked and what is paid can differ significantly.

Tim,

Come on over to Oregon, get into my Scout and cruise around, with me, looking for a great aircraft. Purchase it in "pieces" and import as "parts" then assemble it at home. You must know builders who could help you near by in NSW or QLD.

There are three holy doctrines in my area:

https://www.barnstormers.com

http://www.controller.com

http://www.trade-a-plane.com

The U.S. has sensational deals on all type of aircraft. But, it takes travel, tax & shipping money. Which may be about 35% or more.

Carry on Mate.

Speaking of Savannah, did you check this one out, it's a fairly new add.

SAVANNAH S • $22,000 • BEST DEAL EVER! • Savannah S for sale without engine. The aircraft is in Zanzibar, Tanzania, with the Savannah dealer- not yet registered . The aircraft has been built with flush and solid rivets; the plane has been zinc cromated on the inside . The wiring harness is all done with fuel line and electric pump. The plane comes with a DUC propeller and a new exhaust system for a Rotax 912 engine. The cost of shipping to Europe or South-Africa in a 20ft container +- 4000 USD. • Contact Belbin Belbin, Owner - located Macclesfield, United Kingdom • Telephone: 07415169937 . • Posted August 10, 2015 •
