Bummer, Idaho Dept. of Interior plane down

Initial press report:

The pilot of a small plane registered in Idaho and a passenger were killed in a crash in eastern Oregon.
Benton County sheriff's deputies say they found the wreckage of the plane Monday morning after it failed to arrive in Corvallis as scheduled on Sunday afternoon.
Names of the victims were being withheld until their families were notified.
Deputies say the single-engine Cessna was registered to the U.S. Department of the Interior in Boise, Idaho.
It was located with a signal from a radio beacon aboard the plane.

That sucks. Best wishes to their families.

Winds were really strong above treeline yesterday and only got worse. Listening to the big boys fly overhead in the wee hours, I wasn't imagining it was even much fun for them.

I met Mr Bentley once, nice guy. He ownes a real nice C-170 that I had drooled on a couple times when it was in for annual (the same IA). Sad news. :( I have flown that route a dozen times, and am always amazed how rugged it can be in that little stretch of coast range. Like most mountains, not many places for a forced landing.

I met Ray Bentley (the pilot) several years ago when I was down at the Flying M Ranch near Yamhill Or . As a fellow 170 driver, I recognized his 170B as one I had looked at for sale when I was shopping for one several years before. Nice guy, I always ran into him at the Arlington fly-in every year & we'd BS for a while. Darn shame.
BTW the crash was in western Oregon, not eastern Oregon.

Re: Bummer, Idaho Dept. of Interior plane down

Last spring, I got weathered in at Albany airport and camped out for the night. I met real friendly gentleman (can't remember his name) that had several airplanes, one of which was a 170B that was turbo charged. He was a big fan of his 170. He had a big hangar with a 180, and some jets as well. Could this of been Ray?

Don't think so, pretty sure that 170B was Ray's only airplane.
