Bushwheels Question

I just got through rotating my Bushwheels, something I do every 6 months. I don't see much change in wear from side to side since my toe is set to zero.
My question to all that have them is they have just hundreds of slits in them I have tried several different landing techniques from greasing it on to plopping it on none seem to make much difference. They still seem to peel. I sure don't relish the Idea of having to replace them any time soon.
Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? I usually operate at about 1900-2000 lbs and run 11-12 psi in the tires.

I thought a set of bushwheels would be just the thing for my little 140, but when I saw the price I crapped myself. Luckilly I was at home.

I would still consider a pair, but I'm worried that landing on pavement will scrub them down at a premature rate. I'm sure they're worth the money, but for the price I'd want to get about a decade out of them...

How long have you had yours?

Ravi, what size tires do ya have now? I'm sure Bushwheels are great, but for most of the flying that alot of us do, they aren't required. (No, cool-looking doesn't count as a requirement)
IMHO unless you're gonna be doing the long rocks-big props kinda thing, 850's are plenty of tire for a light airplane like a 140. Just remember that if ya run low tire pressure, it's not hard to spin the tire on the wheel & shear the valve stem. So secure the tire bead to the wheel somehow--screws or glue or both.
850's are also way cheaper than anything else- tires/tubes/shipping for less than 4 bones. $8-900 for 26" Goodyears, and close to 3 grand for 26" BW's.

I have never had a problem with slits? At least none that weren't "terrain induced" I can say though, on a cub if you do not rotate the wheels, as in rotate the tire on the wheel, you will scrub the outer portion of the tire to the chords long before the inner portion is wore out. This is not due to toe in but due to the gear travel outwards on landing. I don't know how that translates to scouts though?
Take care, Rob

I have a set of 31" Bushwheels on my SuperCub. I have had them for over 2 years and they still look great.. They are an absolute blast to fly on . Alaska Bushwheel does a great job building these tires. However, as my tires wear out I will put my Goodyear 8.50 back on. There is not a strip in Idaho that the 8.50 can not land on. On a an aircraft with the weight of a SuperCub, it is near impossible to wear them out. I replaced my last ones not due to wear, but due to age cracks in the tread! The price of the Bushwheels are just too hard to justify. If I was in Alaska doing some true Bush flying, I wouln't have anything else.

I feel compelled to gloat after I took a look at the Bushwheel catalog:
quote **New Low Price** $4450.00/pair + shipping and handling. unquote.

My 'Fox got some "tundra tires" for $60 including mounting. I'm gonna go buy some expensive beer.

This is to a thread on supercub.org where they were talking about GarAeros vs. Bushweels. Looks like Bushweels win if you can afford 'em.

I assume 26" GYs and 31" BWs are 26" and 31" diameters.

What is the diameter of 8.00s and 8.50s?

Flat COuntry,

Bad assumption. The 26 inch Goodyears are NOT 26 inches in diameter when mounted and inflated. More like 22 to 23, depending on pressure, in my experience.

Mike,

I'm asking and making assumptions because I don't know.

What are the 31" BWs?

8.00s and 8.50s?

Does any one know the diameters of these tires?

Flat Country,

The 31s shrink and grow an amazing amount with air pressure and temp. Almost like a balloon. With 10+ lbs they can get over 33" tall on the wheel.
down around 4lbs they are about 29". In any event they have more than enough rolling radius to go over as big an obstacle as most people would want to subject thier plane to. And then some!

Ok Is thier any other options for tires, lets say larger than the 26" GoodYears but not as big as BW29".??

It's not money that makes the Aircraft airworthy It's the mechanic, but its money that makes the mechanic work!!!

There's a pair of BushWheels, the 31's I think, in my mechanics hanger. They came off a wrecked plane that he is repairing. My plan is to steal them when he's not looking and mount them up on my 140 (that's 85 screamin' hp!) and taxi around the airport with big boom box out the window playing "low rider". I'm also looking for a way to take my 33x12.50 BFG Mud Terrain's off my truck and mount those to the 140 for the next fly-in.
