C-140 Questions

A C-140 is on my short list, and I have a few questions for those that have owned.

1) What is the cruise speed? Please specify engine that you have used. 90 hp, O-200, O-235, etc.

2) What could you put in there for baggage? Is it similar to a C-150/C-152? I'm not so worried about the weight as the wife and I don't weigh a lot. More concerned about being able to use the plane to actually go places.

3) Takeoff/Landing distances as gross?

Thanks Everyone!

Re: C-140 Questions

46' C140 with O-235

1) 108mph
2) A little smaller than C150/152 (not as deep)
3) 6000ft @ 70*F was about 1600ft t/o and 700ft landing.

Re: C-140 Questions

C-120 1946 with c-85 A 140 without flaps.
1. cruise speed 100 mph
2. luggage is less than 150/152. Hat rack makes usage more but is harder to load. I fit a folding bike in mine without much other stuff
3. 1500@60 at gross takeoff 1500ft, landing 700ft. Have extenders so I can get in shorter but what is the point if I can't get out. cloth wings and min equipment make numbers different solo. Fun airplane.

Re: C-140 Questions

I had a 120 with 0-200A, it crused 106mph statute with 8.00s 104 with 8.50s and was actually a little faster on skis, federal A2000A, dont overlook 120s they are identicle to a 140 other than the flaps and a small window over the bagage compartment, the flaps are all but usless on a 140 and cause a little more drag.bolth planes slip like crazy wich is much more efective than the flaps. mine would get off in 550 ft with me and half fuel, but it really notices any weight, it will get in waaaaaaay shorter than it will get out of with any load. it was a great little traveling airplane over 100mph on less than 5gph

Re: C-140 Questions

Ditto on the C120.

Mine was with O-200, climb prop, and 8.50's. 100 MPH give or take on 5 GPH. It was great solo, and cramped with two, but the ex and I managed to fly that thing all over the Northwest and into Western British Columbia with no problem.

Weight was critical, but lightly loaded it went into some pretty short and rough places. If heavy, forget it, you needed every foot of a 10,000 ft paved monster to get in the air. And did I mention carb ice??? That airplane made ice taxiing, on climb out, in cruise, descent... You name it, anywhere near moisture in the air it wanted to freeze up and quit.

Re: C-140 Questions

There's an older gent here on the field with a C140. Someone bastardized it with metal wings, but it still seems to do OK.

Re: C-140 Questions

There's an STC to hang a 290D or D2 Lyc (125/135hp) on a C140. Kinda heavy but makes for a pretty good performer, I think. There was an article years ago in the 140 club newsletter entitled "a mountain 140" about one of these and it made a good little bushplane with 850's VG's & a flat prop. Seems like quite a few out there with this engine- but of course, never when you want to buy one.

Re: C-140 Questions

The C140A was the last model of the 140 and had the modernish wing like the 170A, with factory metal skin and single strut. Grandpa had one.

Re: C-140 Questions

That is interesting about the Carb ice. The plane would usually be two up, so takeoffs sound like they might take a while, otherwise, it sounds like a good little ship. I guess I should expect no more than 105mph no matter the engine.

Thanks everyone!

Re: C-140 Questions

With the O-290D my Dad's 120 will cruise around 125mph.

How does the cabin size and performance of a Luscombe compare to the C-140?

Re: C-140 Questions

Here is an old video I made about 6 years ago that I decided to upload. It's of myself flying into and out of a 900ft strip with obstacles on both ends with my Dad's 120.

...sorry couldn't figure out how to embed the video.

Re: C-140 Questions

How much heavier is the O-290 than the C-85 or O-200?

Re: C-140 Questions

I think the O-290 is a little over 50lbs heavier than the C-85 but I can't remember the exact number.

Re: C-140 Questions

The weight difference between the O-290 and the O-200 is about 65lbs. (O-290/C85 is about 78lbs)

I really think the O-200 is a great engine in the 120/140, I would think someone in the area would have one you could ride in. Mine just ran out of steam at high density altitudes.

Re: C-140 Questions

That video is quite amazing. Would love a view from the outside.

Most things here on the east coast are low density altitudes. The more I think about a 120/140, the more I like the idea.

I'll see what I can find, I have a bunch of old videos but no outside views going into that strip.
