C-180 and car incursion
Debrief, share, and hopefully learn from the mistakes of others.
Thought this would never happen to me but it has. During a moment of distraction at my home airport I managed to taxi my C-180 into the trunk of a car that was parked in an unexpected location. I have taxied this stretch a hundred times at least. The engine was running 800 RPM and managed to run my prop though the trunk three times before stopping it.
So I understand that the engine will need to be broken down for inspection and the prop replaced/rebuilt? Can anyone recomend a great shop near San Jose Ca for the engine work to be done. I have a cont O-470-R.
Thx for the advice.
Les

Sad to read that, hope your insurance will cover the accident.
Quite likely you will end up shipping the prop and engine out. There is a very good engine shop here at Troutdale (near Portland) and a prop shop a little father north, in Washington. I had my engine and prop overhauled a few years ago and was very satisfied.
I took my prop and engine off and put it back on, with an inexpensive car engine hoist. Who ever does your annuals will hopefully assist.
Keep us posted, Bob

I feel your pain. I got my front wheel and the left main wheel in a trench that wasn't packed after it was filled in. I had the same thing a engine breakdown and two new blades and hub overhauled. That is too bad. My mechanic did the job on the engine and I sent the prop to Troutdale to the shop Bob White is talking about. Bob

I noticed someone above mentioned Vern Miller.
I did almost all of my STC mods and reconstruction in Vern's Hanger over a two year period.
I now hang out at the North end of Reid Hillview AP (RHV) at the Victory Aero / Aviation Hangar.

I know, from working seven days a week for nearly two years in Vern's hangar, that Vern used EAGLE Engines and Prop shop in Redding or Red Bluff Ca. They did my Gold Eagle Overhaul.
I did not have the port and polish, but did have them do a "Flow Match." I have had compliments on my 0-360 being one of the smoothest running 0-360s. Could have something to do with Kregg's dynamic balance work on the new prop.
As someone else said. Most likely will need to ship the eng. and prop somewhere. I can only state that I have been happy with the results on mine so far.
Better luck to ya
PS Seems that there are several of us form the San Carlos to San Jose are on this forum. Maybe we could sched. a "local" meet-n-greet flight sometime ?!?

It is better to be late in this world, than early in the next.
Where was this car parked that it was blocking the taxiway? Was it on an established taxiway, or just near your hangar, or what? Did you take a photo of the trunk?

Sorry to hear about your mishap... I unfortunately don't have any good recommendations.

You must know Andy W pretty well too... good guy who is always around Victory's place.
I'm always up for some flying, let me know when and where - I'm out of RHV. Airplane is in a hangar off row Quebec right now.

Steve Knopp (P Ponk Aviation, of 470 -> 520 conversion fame) is located at Camano Island airport near Stanwood WA up here in my neighborhood. It's a long ways from home for you but Steve has a real good rep & does very nice work. He seems to specialize in those big Contimentals.

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!
I did one of those once when I was a kid, except in reverse order. I had the car. Got out of it without setting the brake or putting it in gear and it coasted down the ramp into a tied - down 172. Shit! I still think about that one from time to time.
