I don't have a 180 but my Tundra is a four place, 2550 gross wt. tail wheel. It is also an experimental but the winning quote from Chartis does not care about that, its the same to them after the first 40 are flown off. It was half of what Avemco quoted me and 600 cheaper than Falcon with a $100 deductible vs 500 or 1000 on the other two. All my landings are off airport but they don't care on that either and I am covered for all of north America.
As with all of them, it's gonna be wasted if I don't wreck it.

I have no idea if a quote is higher if you are BASED in AK rather than a visitor to AK. For me, if I am on wheels and do not want to go north of Lat 54, Bill White was cheaper than Avemco and a wonderful guy to deal/talk with. However, I live above Lat 51 degrees in the summer and routinely head further north in the. You can get coverage for a trip to the north but you pay dearly for this. With Avemco, there is very generous geographic coverage, up to the Arctic Circle, AND the other benefit for me was the ability to have 2 policies, one for time on floats, and the other on wheels. They really don't care which you are on, they just bill you for the actual time on which ever. Other companies give you one policy whether or not you are on floats for one week out of the year or 9 months, whatever.

Since the float coverage is virtually double the wheels coverage, I anguish every year whether or not to go hull only. With one experience of a total loss, I, so far, have swallowed deeply and written the check. FF

It apears everyone is thinking insurance as it is a major fixed cost of owning a airplane.
When getting quotes I did my best to compare red apples to red apples. Private strip, off airport
landings and skies. Though I am a low time pilot 800tt 800tw, 175 in the 180 the policy difference seemed high to me. I think I will check with a broker and see what comes up.
