C-182 reclining seat issue_advice?

Greetings: I have a 1963 model F C-182 with reclining seats. One seat has a worn cam such that if you lean backwards it will pop the pawl out of the cam. It can be exciting. The pictures below show (in order) a cam and a pawl, the loose fitting pawl-cam, and a pawl-cam that are more tightly meshed.

Online I found a replacement cam for $400-$500 dollars. Any suggestions for a fix? At the moment I have the pawl movement restricted by some aviation zip ties....not a preferred option.

thanks for any advice...

Several ways to skin the cat. If this is the Left seat I would change out seat backswith the Right. Then I would find a rough spot that needed dressing with a file until the notch was square. You can go to Wentworth or any other aircraft salvage and see if they have a good used part. Check E-bay or Crags list for local parts/seats. DENNY

Check with Dave at Sutton Aircraft Salvage. I know he has a bunch of Cessna seats, and he might sell you the part you need. 907-745-6969.

Before throwing a bunch of money at parts, google a copy of Cessna service letter SE75-11. It addresses issues with the seat pawls and may solve your issue.

I second the suggestion to go to Dave at Sutton Aircraft Salvage, just outside of Palmer. He is a great guy and has a pretty good inventory. The phone number listed above is for a land line and is the only way to contact him (no text or email).

Re: C-182 reclining seat issue_advice?

I found a copy of the service letter...it does provide max dimensions allowed for the cam slot and the pawl. It also shows how to file both so the fit is less rounded and has right angles less prone to popping out. Let me know if you need a copy of the service letter

Also found this....I am NOT an A&P, and have no idea if the assertion that this part "would fall under owner produced parts". I will leave that up to the legal types to chime in....
