C170 Props
Lycoming, Continental, Hartzell, McCauley, or any broad spectrum drive system component used on multiple type.
Hi guys,
I need some advice from you 170 hot shots. I think that I read on this sight that someone had a 76in. prop on a 170 that was repitched to 48. Is this true and if so, is it worth the expense to repitch my 51? I know that what I really need is the 80-42 but that will have to wait.
Anyone in the Fairbanks area need another flying partner pm me.
Thanks, Bryan

I'm pretty happy with a 76-51. Couple years ago, I ran a borrowed prop for a few hours which was about a 74-1/4 (below minimums) X 47 or 48. Turned up more, maybe took off a bit shorter-- but it felt like it was beating the air without getting a lot of results. Probably a combination of the flat pitch and short length.
Anybody up there got a flat prop you can borrow?

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!
Sounds like I should just keep it at 51 and save my pennies. Thanks for the advice.

Would be cool if there was a prop reseller where you could go demo props. Show up in your old 170 and try out the 7651 and the 7648 back to back.
Maybe fiddling in X-Plane is realistic enough.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
About C170 Props- So I sprung for an 8042 at last annual, and have been rather satisfied with the climb performance. Noticeable loss in cruise tho- maybe as much as 15 mph. (Hard to evaluate since the air has been moving around a lot on all my recent flights.) I've got several mods/big tires/double puck clevelands that increase the induced drag, so obviously cruise isn't my holy grail. Safety in the mountains is. And I am keeping the 7653 to hang if any long x-c trips come up. I was just wondering if anyone out there has made the same switch and has any tips for getting the most out of the new screw. Seems that short field take off would be improved by not raising the tail, but leaving it low and allowing the bird to fly itself off. I hope to get out and test that idea soon. Any other suggestions welcomed.
Thanks,

My best short field takeoffs with a 170b with a sportsman STOL and a 76/50prop are done by setting trim alittle ahead of normal, set 10deg flap, dont bother holding the brakes for ful power just let it role, as soon as the tail lifts its self pull on another 10deg flap and your flying.
With me 200lb and half fuel at 1800asl it takes 550ft about to break ground. gets much longer as you ad weight!
