C172M Model Slant Tail - Tailwheel conversion
Technical and practical discussion about specific aircraft types such as Cessna 180, Maule M7, et al. Please read and search carefully before posting, as many popular topics have already been discussed.
I have been fortunate enough to take on a new student with a tailwheel converted 1976 C172. I had heard the slant tail converted models had problems with tail authority in crosswinds. So far this is not what I have experienced. It flies beautifully and can land in stiff crosswinds with full flaps. The rudder control took some getting used to but overall I have been impressed. It has a Horton STOL kit and is about to get VGs. It lands really short. Curious if anyone else has experience in them. This photo was taken at my friend's farm and strip near Salem - OR87. Next to my C180 it is my new favorite airplane.

This is great info. I have 2 wrecks that I've been considering converting, but the lack of rudder authority story has kept me a bit apprehensive. Glad to hear it may not he true.

I've just converted a slant tail 66H (still a long way from flying though). So I'm pleased to hear that.
Do you know which conversion it is? Or what gear it's on? Like C170, C180, C185 gear, Bolen gear etc..?

He has the Bolen conversion. I don't know a lot about the STC but so far it has been a pleasant surprise. We flew a couple of weeks ago in 15+ knot gusty crosswinds and there was plenty of rudder authority with full flaps.
