C180 alternator belt
Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?

So, the alternator belt for my 1954 Cessna 180 is getting sketchy. All numbers are worn off. The parts book shows the belt but does not identify it anywhere that I can find. I have a Plane Power alternator STC but they also do not identify the belt any where that I can find. Motor is a J model. Any of you guys know a part number? Thanks!

I would take it to the local Napa dealer. They can size it and give you a Napa number. If you don't like the idea of using a Napa belt you could take the Napa number and cross reference it to another manufacture.

I agree with the local NAPA dealer. Done it more than once.
Make sure the two pulleys are ALIGNED. Was flying another friend from McCall to Sulphur Crick when the old worn belt jumped off. Turned back over Landmark - reset the belt - snugged it up a bit - Same thing.
Took the old belt to NAPA and while putting it in/on I noticed that the two pulleys were off-set slightly. An additional thick washer fixed that.
Had lunch instead of breakfast. Had to buy two new half gallons of ice cream by then.

I would go get it from auto parts store too. if you are concerned about the brand just have them get you one made by gates.

Since the prop is coming off maybe buy two and zip tie the sapre in place.

Thanks guys.
I'm really trying to find a certified part number. If all else fails I have a son who manages a NAPA store. We will do lunch and I'm sure he will have a rabbit to pull out of his hat...

McCall Air used to wire in a spare alt. belt on their Islanders. Tom said they were used mostly to get home with since the heat would "set" them a bit out of shape, but usable enough to finish out the day and get home.
That is where I got the idea that I might try it but was told it was not worth it. Maybe they just wanted to be able to charge me for taking the prop off and putting it back on.
EDIT:
To be clearer: The Islanders had Lyc. 360s with alt. up front - right behind the prop. The 180 had the alt. back near the firewall.

I wonder.
I can't see why there would be more 'heat damage' to the belt zip tied or in use. Roughly the same geography.
It might be out of round for a few revolutions, but that should not matter either.

Prop shouldn't have to come off for a C180. Alternator is on the back near the firewall.
