C180: Replacing mechanical fuel gauges with electric

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Re: C180: Replacing mechanical fuel gauges with electric

Ace, I'm based at KLMO and nearing the end of the install of a CGR-30p in my '56 180. I however wasn't interested in replacing my wing root mechanical gauges with electrical senders. My understanding was this wasn't an option anyway. I'm interested to hear your answer hear what you come up with. Send me a pm if you want to walk over an look at my setup before we button her all up. We should be around Saturday afternoon.

The Cies senders require a 5V power supply be routed to the sender. Any suggestions on what power supply to use, and where to procure?

Soy, It is an option with the CGR-30P. But you do run into how many different sensors can be supported by the CGR. You would have to replace the fuel senders, I had electric ones already (1958 180A), so it wasn't a big issue. When I did my CGR I had already done the Aerospace Logic digital fuel gage and replaced the senders. Now I sorta like having the digital fuel staring at me on the panel. I'm very nervous about fuel quantity and that gage helps me;) Having mechanical ones, would be a fine solution, I suppose they are in the wing root? If I was in your situation I probably wouldn't have done it either. Not to mention the fact a change like that would probably require a 337 FA, a bit of a muddy area.

Right. My '56 doesn't have electrical gauges - only mechanical in the wing root. I'm okay with the totalizer and using mechanical gauges as backup.

Re: C180: Replacing mechanical fuel gauges with electric

I received a message that my senders were ready to ship, and that payment was due.

When I called, Scott picked up the phone. I asked him about the power supply, and learned that they've now incorporated voltage regulators into the sender, and that the 5V power supply is no longer required, they operate off of "ship's power". I'm guessing, but they'll probably work on anything from 5-32v now. That seems to be a typical range with modern electronics. My airplane is 12V.

Adding these voltage regulators to the design is a very good move on the part of Cies. Now I need to send my JPI 930 back for the change to revive the square wave signal instead of the resistive signal.
