C185 empty weights

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

C185 empty weights

My “new” A185F is almost 100lbs heavier than my old A185E.

The new plane is 1,965 lbs empty on 8.00 tires. It has a 520 and Robertson STOL. It is 18 lbs heavier than it was when new.

My previous plane was very similarly equipped except it had Flint wing extensions and no Robertson. It also had a 550 rather than a 520. It had 8.50 tires.

Otherwise same seats, same prop, same battery, same starter, same interior, same everything i can think of that significantly affects weight.

Are the F models that much heavier for some reason? Looks like there is a little more un-useable fuel but that only accounts for 18 lbs.

Re: C185 empty weights

Were both of those 185's weighed, or are those "paper weights"?

Re: C185 empty weights

I weighed the old one and it was about 10 pounds heavier than the paper said.

I have not weighed my new one yet, but I don’t suspect it will be lighter when I do.

If anything, I'm sure it would be heavier in real life.

Re: C185 empty weights

That would make more than 100 lbs difference. Just seems crazy to me where all that weight could be.

Re: C185 empty weights

I have had similar experiences between 185s in a fleet, all pretty similarly equipped. Our outfit weighed each plane as routine every few years just to keep us honest.

Sometimes Avionics can add or delete a fair amount of weight. I bought a 66 model 180 from the government years ago, and spent most of a winter removing no longer used wires, connectors, etc, etc, not to mention a LOT of gunk from the belly.

I'd weigh the new one, but I wouldn't bet it'll be lighter. THat said, I've seen so many incorrect weights on airplanes that it also wouldn't surprise me.
