C185 Panel Upgrade

So I had posted some panel instruments that I had pulled from the panel I have been having upgraded and some peeps had asked for pics of the progress. Let me say first, I think that I got a pretty good deal but would loved to have discussed with Bigrenna before hand so he could give the advise that he gave during the process. I have not picked up the plane and it has taken over 2.5 months to get to this point, I think we are getting close. Here are pics with comments of the process. Shop is in Little Rock Arkansas and I will say I think COVID has been a blessing in terms of expense for me. SO with out further adue here ya go.

Pre- destruction panel.

Here is the first time I saw the panel all torn apart. It was a little Scary. This is when the shop called with the chief sign off guy not wanting to cut the sub panel for the G3 touch. It was a pain but with a little smoozing and the right verbage from Bigrenna we got him to where he was more comfortable with the needed changes.

here is the location for the G3 and you can see along the top edge where the change needed to be made for it to fit. AND YES IT WILL FIT!!!

Ok I gotta end here because my work computer is not working so I have to shut it down but do not want to start over. I will continue in a little while

Wow - looks like someone took a sawzall to that co-pilot side, and the center stack rails have all the hole that you will ever need :) Look forward do seeing seeing the final pics - What else will be in the panel besides the G3 touch?

Re: C185 Panel Upgrade

Its a complete redo. Getting rid of the vacume pump x 2. Adding a garmin gi-275 as the back up, garmin gma 245, garmin gnx-375, garmin gtr-20 remote coms, garmin sl-30 nav/com x2, had a garmin 796 so panel mounting that, had to get a new ELT, added a garmin apple pluggy thingy, oh and added the garmin aoa as well. It should really be sweet when finished.

Re: C185 Panel Upgrade

Here is the beginning of the new wiring. I'm no expert but looks pretty clean to me. Also here are the new GPS antenna and removed others.

Here is the shelf under the baggage area with the different computer modules and the new ELT will be on the shelf as well. You will see it in a later picture.

Re: C185 Panel Upgrade

And now for everyone has been waiting not so long for since I just started and have continued today. The putting it back together.

f you look at the main panel, its a dark gray almost black. I will be using it as the color for the interior metal when I redo the interior. I have already redone the seats with Daniel Maccrone's Sports Air Seats. I will post pics of those a little later on.

And now the money Shot. It is almost all back together and will be test flown next week. I hope to go and pick tootsie roll up next week.

Re: C185 Panel Upgrade

That looks great!

On a side note, does anyone have a source to redo the plastic face on an older Cessna 185 factory Engine cluster? Mine is cracked and crazed but I do like the nostalgia of the gauges.

Also how does one start a new thread along the same lines of my question? I'm no techno geek as you can see....

Gypsy, I assume that's a G3X and GI 275? Looks really sharp man. Are you still going to use the iPad for anything?

Re: C185 Panel Upgrade

Nushi,
Man I failed to see this. I have been finishing up on my instrument rating and we have been focusing on using the instruments in the airplane. I find the 796 combined with the g3 and gnx 375 are a great match together. I do not need the ipad. Now I always have it but have not mounted it in any way since I have been using the combination as above. I think if I could add one thing, I would have added a second GI-275 instead of the garmin VOR. I would have placed it right below the backup GI-275. This would make the perfect backup if the PFD where to fail. All in all I am extremely happy and the plane can do way more than I can.
