Re: C205...What am I???

Yup, what MTV said, my initial is N-number, colour, type; and then just colour and type. This is becoming more common at my aerodrome, and as stated, is MUCH more helpful in identifying traffic at non-towered fields.

Of course this has led Girlscout to think we're flyin' in a "Yellow SoupCup", rather than a yellow SuperCub...

The FCC could give a crap less what you call yourself on an aircraft radio band.

UND uses the "Sioux" call sign (soon to go away, I suppose...hostile you know) and the "Green" call sign for solo students.

In DOI, we used "Interior XX" as a call sign.

I thought about seeing what it would take to get a call sign assigned to us. I like Wolfpack or Wolf 1,2,etc....for way down the road when I hope to have more than one. Air Wolf? Is that not allowed since that was a whirlybird bird? :D

Re: C205...What am I???

It gets worse internationally. I was flying the airway north of Cuba from Central America in my trusty Birddog. I used the Cessna 305A designator. The Cubans wanted to know what a 305 was, I replied,"an L-19." They then asked what an L-19 was, I replied, "an O-1." Again what's that? I finally said Birddog, they just gave up then.

Then again at Roswell NM, I got asked what kind of helicopter a Birddog was, some kind of reference to my incredibly slow groundspeed.

From Wikipedia: The Cessna 205, 206, and 207, known variously as the Super Skywagon, Skywagon, Stationair, and Super Skylane are a family of single engine, general aviation aircraft with fixed landing gear used in commercial air service and also for personal use.

Yeah, that is where I pulled the names from in the original post. Sounds like they didn't know what to call it either! #-o

Re: C205...What am I???

Ok. The verdict is in.

Two days ago I was flying a 172 and the controller missed the "Skyhawk" when I checked in and asked me to "say type". So I did and, since they weren't busy, I asked them if they have a database that they reference. He said they did and, after I explained about the 205,he said he'd look it up. A minute later he came back and said that a 205 shows as a Super Skylane.

So, since Super Skylane is a bit of a mouth full, and most everyone probably would have no idea what it is, or think that I'm just overly proud of a 182, I'll just use Cessna. At least now when I am asked, I'll know what the response is that jives with ATC's database.

Re: C205...What am I???

The guys here with experiance here say call it a Cessna. I get the simplicity of that but there are often more than a few Cessnas in the pattern at the same time.
Your plane looks like a Stationair (and proud of it!), call it that and throw in a color. When some low time jackass like myself enters the patern looking for for one of 3 Cessnas in the pattern I won't cut you off thinking I'm #4 behind the 150.

Re: C205...What am I???

Cessna never named the 205 or the early 210 for that matter either. I just call myself "Cessna" - if someone queries me, I tell them it's a 205 - early version of a 206!

I've attached a picture of the model index from my 200 series service manual, shows the various model designations and years.

Well, I guess you'll have to take my word for it while I go read up on importing pics!

Ha Ha! I have always thought of my 205 as an early 206 also but after reading this I have realized we are wrong!!!!

The 206 is a later version of the 205 :D

Re: C205...What am I???

ATC is only interested in the name to the extent it gives them a general idea of performance and runway requirements, and for the benefit of tower and ground controllers, what general shape to look for out the window. So for those purposes, "Stationair" works fine for a C-205, and is unlikely to be confused with anything else.

182 STOL driver wrote:Cessna 205's were only made 2 years 1963 and 1964. Called a "Super Skylane" until the end of production (a little less than 500 units) all delivered from factory were IO-470-S engines .All the IO-520's make it into a
P206 . In 1964 the Cessna company started delivering P (passenger doors ) and U (large double doors on R/H side ) .1971 was last year for the 206P .All 206's after 71 were "U" models.

Slight corrections ...

The Model 210-5 (aka "205", 1963-64 model years) never had a name. "Super Skylane" was only applied to the P206 (1965-70 model years).

The 205 (260 hp, "people" interior with two front doors and small rear door on left side) and 206 "Super Skywagon" (285 hp, redesigned flaps and ailerons, extended tailplane, single front door on left and double cargo doors at right rear, utilitarian interior) were in the catalog together for the 1964 model year.

For 1965 the 205 was dropped and replaced with the P206 "Super Skylane", which combined the 206's engine, wings and tail with the 205's cabin and door arrangement. To differentiate it, the 206 was now called "U206".

The P206 was dropped after the 1970 model year. For 1971 the U206 was renamed "Stationair 6". Both utilitarian and plush interior options were offered, but all had the large double cargo doors on the right and a single front door on the left side.

Re: C205...What am I???

I always use "Cessna" for my 170. In Slc they almost always come back with "say type Cessna". I say 170, but since my tail number is 170SB, it usually causes more confusion and I have to repeat my answer. I'll ask next time what they would prefer. I don't like saying SkyHawk, and Skychicken isn't quite right either...

Easy solution: When ATC comes back with "Say type Cessna" tell em "Slow one". That gets right to the point.
