Well I made it! The second day was just as good as the first. After departing Mack Mesa airport (thanks again Ladd), had a super smooth ride all the way to Monarch pass. Started to get just a few little bumps just over the pass at 12,500 and the rest of the way to Pueblo for my last fuel stop, but that was it. After some coffee, popcorn and a cookie at Flower Aviation in Pueblo, I headed for Dodge City. Sure missed the scenery from the previous part of the trip once over eastern CO and KS, but stayed low to make sure I didn't miss anything!! Talk about FLAT!! Winds were pretty strong on that part of the trip, 5-15 mph headwind component, but not bad considering I had it so good crossing the big rocks.
The new owner was pleased with the airplane, and took it for a spin just minutes after I landed...had a big smile on his face when he got back. After taking care of the paperwork, we went for dinner, then gave me his jeep for the night so I could get to the airport in the morning. Next morning hopped the regional flight to Denver, It was First Class on Alaskan Airlines back to Oakland (Lots of miles saved up!) where Mark picked me up and brought me back to my pickup in Modesto.
From a WX standpoint alone it was an epic trip, made that much better by the stellar performance of the Rans and the good people I met along the way! I really love cross country flying and don't get to do it that much, I'm glad this opportunity came up and that it worked out so smooth.
Here's some trip info (GPS) and pics from the flight:
Routing; Modesto, Tonopah, NV; Milford, UT; Mack, CO; Pueblo, CO; Dodge City, KS.
Total distance:1,228.8 miles
Avg. Fuel burn: 4.87 GPH
Avg. Speed: 99MPH
Time: 12.4 Hours
Mono Lake just before crossing the first set of big rocks. While climbing up and cruising just before crossing Tioga Pass, I had a pretty significant tailwind (132 mph GS at one point). This worried me a little thinking I would get slammed by the mountain wave on the other side, but thankfully it never materialized.

A group of horses I found about 50 miles west of my second fuel stop in Milford, UT

The absolutely stunning topography and geology of the continental divide. It was a great time of day to be crossing this area with the sun relatively low on the horizon, really made the color stand out on the rocks. I wish I had more time and a better camera, the pictures don't do it justice.

An Elk leg bone sitting on a barrel outside a convenience store in Mack...

Turns out it was for this guy

Monarch Pass ahead in the distance. Was glad to see there wasn't a cloud in the sky!! Crossed at 12,500 with little turb

All in all a great trip, would do it again tomorrow if I could! Once I get my Super Cub out of the shop i might head back out sometime this winter and go play in Eastern UT and western CO.
