Re: Cabela's airplane

They have the same Fairchild model at the store in Fargo, ND. I have a buddy that owns Fred Scheels old Pitts S1S, custom ordered with white and green paint. Fred (must have been junior, he was in his 80's) just died in the last 6 months or so.

I remember that Pitts from when I was in Fargo at DakAero! I didn't know he had a Fairchild too...or one in the family lineage... awesome planes!! I got quite familliar with a Fairchild 71.
The Cabellas in Spokane (actually Stateline, ID I think) has a J-3 hanging in the back too........

It does, when I was over deer hunting I looked up the N-number. I believe it was an actual J-3 too with expired registration to someone in the midwest.

Lance,
Yep, that's it! I remember talking to him a few times....seemed like a really nice guy. Just something about that color scheme that I always liked too.

Re: Cabela's airplane

There's a new Cabela's in Tulalip WA (near Marysville), anyone been there yet? I'm curious what kind of airplane they have hanging in this one?
I was thinking it would be pretty cool to set one up to look as if it augered in (CFIT) on "Taxidermy Mountain", or nosed over trying to land on the top. #-o

Re: Cabela's airplane

They were advertising for a Beechjet pilot in Sydney a few weeks ago. My wife wasn't too thrilled with the prospect of living in Nebraska though.

What's wrong with Sidney Nebraska?
It's a good place to practice your xwind landings.
Where did you see the ad for a new pilot?
Cabela's hangar is about 200 ft from mine.

Re: Cabela's airplane

Well, Cabela's is running the ad again so I applied this time even though I won't be home until mid July. With any luck I will have to brush up on my crosswind skills.

I heard that the Tulalip Cabela's does not have an airplane. An emloyee told me when I called there that it's about 2/3 of the size of the Lacey store- maybe they only put airplanes in the larger buildings?

This old Beaver is on display at the Calgary Intl. Apt (CYYC). It has stairs going up so kids/people can go up and sit in the cockpit. Lots of old battle scars on this old bird. Really cool display! Saw it and thought of this thread right away!

That is very cool, I admit a bit sad at first knowing it is no longer flying, but very cool to see that it is there where kids can climb in it, I know it will spawn many a future back country pilot sitting there and any kid with any sense of imagination will walk away from it muttering about flying a beaver when they grow up.

Re: Cabela's airplane

If that's a real Beaver carcass, they're tying up a lot of money there-- due to demand for Kenmore (& others) rebuilds, even a Beaver "core" isn't cheap.

hicountry wrote:SNY is the home of Cabelas. I can actually look out my front door and see their headquarters and the store about 4 miles away accross the valley. There is no J3 hanging in this store but their corporate jet, a Beach 400 is hangared about 250 ft away from my hangar at SNY. I know the guy who rebuilt/built several of the Cubs that hang in several stores. The last time I saw him here he was delivering a J3 on floats to a store east of here. If you fly into SNY, the FBO will call Cabelas and they will send a van out to pick you up and take you to the store.

Roger that!

Last summer my wife and I were on our way home to Washington State from Kansas City in our C-172. We'd hoped to make Laramie for our overnight stop, but afternoon convection had other ideas. I looked at the chart and saw an inviting airport at a place I'd never heard of before, and informed said wife, "We're going to Sidney!"

Ten miles out I called Unicom at SNY and was unprepared for the response, "Y'all going to Cabelas?" Um, no, we just need a hotel and a way to get there.

Once we were on the ground, the nice guy at the FBO helped us tie down and tossed us the key to a courtesy car. We booked a room in a hotel across the street from the gorgeous Cabelas headquarters campus. As it turned out we had a great time in this friendly little town.

Right after we landed a pretty J-3 made a textbook crosswind landing. Turned out it had come all the way from Medford, Oregon, and stopped at SNY on its way to AirVenture at Oshkosh. Our long trip paled in comparison to his!

While preflighting our 172 the next morning we saw Cabelas' Beechjet taxi out.

Landed there late one night in a T207. Had a pizza delivered to the ramp, ate and slept in the plane until morning and flew out.
