California now has aviation as a recreational activity!

This is real good news! Thanks to all those that worked to make it happen. =D>

Sacramento, Calif. — On June 25, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law Senate Bill 1072, which amends the California Recreational Use Statute (RUS) to include recreational aviation. Since the RUS now protects landowners from liability arising from recreational use of their property, airstrip owners will likely be more receptive to transient pilots. It is a win for both airport owners and for pilots who now have more recreational opportunities in the state.

SB1072 is the 24th such bill that has passed after the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) spearheaded an effort to amend RUS language in states nationwide. "California is such an important aviation state and with the passage of the RUS this is not only an important day for California but a very big day for aviation,” said RAF President John McKenna. “The RAF is excited about the momentum this creates to meet our goal of having the RUS passed in all states."

The RAF sponsored the bill, which California Senator Jean Fuller (R–Bakersfield) introduced. She and her husband are both private pilots and recognize the value of general aviation for their 250-mile commute to the state capitol as well as their recreational activities. RAF state liaison John Kounis worked with Senator Fuller’s office to provide aviation-specific research and background information throughout the legislative process. Representatives from Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the California Pilots Association, and the Association of California Airports also helped rally support for the bill.

The Recreational Aviation Foundation is a public 501(c)3 non-profit organization formed to “preserve, maintain and create public use recreational and backcountry airstrips nationwide,” 1711 W. College, Bozeman, MT 59715, www.theraf.org.

That is excellent news! I normally wouldn't suggest this, but hopefully other states follow California's example.

Everyone here on this site needs to cough up 25 bucks, or more, to the RAF. They have done great work for all of us.

I had some funds languishing in the ole US Paypal account, So I figured I cough up 100 for a supporting membership. I'm not even from your Country, but anywhere, anytime, someone puts in that kind of effort and makes significant contributions towards the rights and freedoms of aviators, hell, I'll support that. Probably pisses of more than a few lawyers in the process. That's worth a hundred bucks alone =D> Congratulations to the RAF for their efforts of mitigating litigation for landowners. A very significant milestone.

A very good point. Publicity is the next important phase and maybe some BCP'rs can pick up the ball. We have some very talented up and coming video producers on here now. How about a little competition on the production of a PR video featuring the virtues (fire spotting, searching missing persons etc) and enjoyment of BC flying focusing on the incredible minimal impact on the surrounding environment light planes have. and emphasizing the min legal risk to landowners of pilots landing on their property. Note, I had a nearby property owner seek me out to fly around and look for their lost dog. I wasn't successful but they sure appreciated it. Lots of positive spin. Package it into a 1 minute run and push it onto PBS for a start They are usually keen to run Public service type productions. Just an idea.
