Wow. Can it fly 50 mph?

It's like a selfie stick without the stick!

Curious if its obstacle avoidance is good enough not to plow into other folks while it's trailing you at 50MPH.

The tracking device is my wallet, and it's locked on.

Re: Camera multi-rotor next level: Lily

It would be cool to see if it has proximity sensors to know how close it gets to stuff and avoids it on its own...though though may be a next model feature. Wonder what would happen if you throw it out the window on final and just let it follow. Or throw it out then take off. Does it just land and wait or? So many endless options

Give it a few years and backcountry fly-ins will look like the battle scene from Ender's Game, with airplanes dodging camera drones by the dozens to take off and land.

It doesn't do any collision avoidance:

Lots of GA pilots are concerned that with the new popularity of these flying cameras, they will become a hazard to our flying if operated in our proximity. These concerns don't go away just because the person operating the drone is a pilot himself, in fact, that just might make it worse -- "I know what I'm doing, I'm a pilot".

Re: Camera multi-rotor next level: Lily

Too cool. I had to pre-order one.

I doubt the Lily would be a threat to GA.

For safety, the Lily Camera has a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour, won’t fly higher than 50 feet or more than 100 feet away from the user, and, using its camera sensors, it won’t ever get too close to objects or subjects (there’s a 5-foot minimum distance). While it operates autonomously, the user can tell it where to be exactly (to the side, or circle 360 degrees) and zoom in or out, using the tracking device. In case it goes out of range or the battery gets low, it has a failsafe-landing feature. There’s also a kill-switch on the remote, if that ever becomes necessary.

Tell that to the guy who gets one through the windshield, due to someone else (maybe even his buddy) wanting to get a good close-up at a fly-in (see Gump's post above). Call me a pessimist, but if there's a way for somebody's stupidity to cause a problem, it'll happen-- a sub-rule of Murphy's law.

Re: Camera multi-rotor next level: Lily

Just to be clear, the 5 ft distance stuff they're talking about is between it and the bracelet wearer. It has no concept of other people or objects in its path.

As long as you're in a wide open space and not around others it's probably OK, but I'm guessing that these things will get banned pretty quickly from ski resorts and the like.

Re: Camera multi-rotor next level: Lily

The point is that it is not technology or in this case the Lily which is the problem, it is irresponsible humans. Let's face it, at this point in time more pilots died due to midair collisions between aircraft then being hit by a drone. Obviously regulations are required for operating such a device.

Re: Camera multi-rotor next level: Lily

Sorry to be rather cynical ...

That thing is for knuckle heads. I have flown/own real aircraft and R/C. R/C has evolved into a dangerous deal in my opinion.

R/C is great in the middle of the Arizona Desert. Because, when crap goes wrong it can kill somebody close by.

I agree-- irresponsible humans, aka idiots, are the problem. But you can create all the regulations you want, and idiots will ignore them. Look how many deaths from DUI accidents. Look how many people still cellphone, and worse, text, while driving. The examples are endless.

Re: Camera multi-rotor next level: Lily

I agree, however that is no reason to ban new technology like this. You don't ban guns do you? There is plenty idiots owning them and killing people. Or smartphones, plenty people texting while driving and killing themselves or others. Thats just life. What happened to people being responsible for their actions? Oh yes, totally forgot, its easier to take the manufacturer to court and blame them.
