Camping -Oregon Airstrips ?

Does anyone have a list of Oregon Airstips -where I can camp? Central -east or west ? I'm going to 022 (Columbia,CA.) end of June and would like to go to Oregon and camp/hike/fish or whatever for a few days/nights. Then it's on to ALW (Walla Walla) for a shower and see old friends. Any suggestions would be welcome. please email me at [email protected] or this forum. Have old 182 setup for off roading-big main tires (with double puck Clevlands) 6x6 nose and Sportsman Stol Kit.
Thanks Bill Reid

Saw a nice straight-tail 182 yesterday at Harvey Field in Snohomish.... had a 3-blade prop (520 powered?),850-10 mains & 850-6 nosewheel...pretty tough looking....

Eric, Steve Knopp (P Ponk Aviation, Camano Isl.) used to have a 182 set up like that with his Eagle engine...520 cyls on an O-470. He frequents Harvey, as he used to work there a long time ago. Are you a regular there?? I used to take care of the Fairchild 71 there for Jack Ady.

God put me here to accomplish a certain amount of things...right now I'm so far behind, I'll never die!!

Bill,

For camping with fishing in Oregon try Red's Horse Ranch or Minam Lodge (they're connected), or Flying M Ranch. Also Dug Bar in Hells Canyon. There's others and I'm hoping someone with more knowledge of the area will provide more info.

All these destinations I've listed are internet searchable and on Airnav.

I always like to recommend Powers State, inland from Bandon. Prospect State in southern OR might be good. Lands Inn, Minam, Red Horse. Also Nehalem Bay or Siletz might be good if you feel like flying the coast.

Here's one of Jr's pics from Powers:

I have an idea it might be Knopp's... Dick Jacob from NW Prop has/has a similar 182, but I recall that his had a belly pod.
I fly into Harvey's occasionally, and have admired Jack's 71 many a time. He had it listed for sale a few years ago for like $300K... not likely to sell at that price, but it is very cool. I remember seeing him fly it into Port Townsend many years ago, watching that big old thing approach at like 50 mph it seemed like it wasn't even moving at all.

I was gonna mention Lands Inn, but the feller mentioned fishing and it's a bit of a hike to the river from there.

Sure would like to get back to Lands Inn and meet Carol one of these days.

The bass are biting at my place but the strip is not quite ready. You can land at Montague O46 and use there bunk house at 5 bucks a night. Not to many people know about this.

Bill,

I've camped at many airports in Oregon over the last 10 years. There is a huge variety in terms of the camping experience, from near wilderness to right next to town, desert, forest, coast. What kind of camping experience do you want?

Well, for summer camping and flying I like Memaloose. It's a rather rough grass/weeds strip at 6800' on the edge of the Snake River Canyon. There are picnic tables right off the runway next to the forest service shack. Drinking water is available from a spring a short walk away. Supplies can be picked up at Joseph or Enterprise some 30 miles away, both have paved runways.

Another good place is Lakeside State on the south central coast. You can pitch a tent on the grass. It's a short walk to town for groceries or whatever. There's an out house at the strip. The Oregon Dunes are just on the other side of the Highway. Fishing close by on Tenmile Lake.

For Central Oregon I might suggest the Fort Rock BLM strip. Paved but not used except by us PPC fliers. You can camp right there. Water is usually available at the BLM outpost across the road. Close to Derrick Cave, Fort Rock, Hole in the Ground, Christmas Valley Sand Dunes.

Next weekend from the 24th to the 27th we'll have about 30 PPC folks camped at Beasley Lake (dry) near Fort Rock. It's large enough for you to land. Then we'll be heading over to Fort Rock BLM or Alkali Lake State for a few days, then over to Peters Dry Lake.

Alkali Lake State gets pretty hot but it's a huge gravel strip in the desert and you can camp there. No one uses it and the country around there is quite interesting. No water available though.

Like someone else said, Pelican Point on the Owyhee Res is a great place. Very nice scenery and no roads in. Gets really hot there in the summer though but you can always go swimming.

Toketee, Crescent State & Santiam Junction

If you prefer more forested destiniations, how about Toketee? It's nicely forested around the strip, and you can walk down to the North(?) Fork of the Umpqua.

Crescent State didn't look that great to me for camping when I was last there, but maybe if you get away from the clearing around the airstrip (stump farm), you could find a nice place to throw down a sleeping bag.

I checked out Santiam last weekend, but it didn't look like much of a place to camp. The strip is graded out of cinders. I think I finally know where all of those cinders that were trapped under the floor of my old Skylane came from (it was used for fire spotting out of Bend back in the early '70s).

Good luck.

Mc Kenzie Bridge State Airport is quite nice. Grass strip and you can camp right next to your plane. The river is a very short walk just across the highway.

That sounds nice... maybe a few of us Oregon guys could meet up there later this summer or early fall. I have camped and ridden mountain bikes on the McKenzie river, it is really nice. I've never visited this airport though, the description makes the approach/takeoff sound a little dicey due to the high trees and terrain surrounding it.
