Canada

Its been 25 years since I last flew into Canada. I just ordered the Calgary and Vancouver VFR charts. Planning on entering at Del Bonita. I have a Garmin 430 WAS with one year old data base for USA but no Canada data. Thinking of adding Canada and update USA. Is there anything else suggested. Not an I Pad guy.

Will be in Lethbridge area. Anyplace that I need to stop, grass strips etc. Flying a 1956 182 with 600x6 on nose and 800x6 for mains.

Re: Canada

Make sure you have a customs sticker or the receipt after you ordered it, I install my customs sticker in the pilots door jam

Too bad about the iPad thing, foreflight is handy for these types of missions, even without the Canada subscription is got pretty much all the data you need for most any mission

Good idea on doing a one time US & Canada update on the 430

Re: Canada

Appears "fly2ak.com" has already done all the work AND is updated frequently.

Re: Canada

Maybe add a bookmark for the smoke forecast

You need the US CBP sticker ( or receipt that you've bought one) to enter the US, not to enter Canada.

To enter the US you need prior permission from the CBP to land, so talk to them by phone beforehand. Canada customs needs 2 hr minimum telephone notice.

Most problems I see are pilots crossing the border without an active flight plan, assuming Foreflight opened it for them. If you don't receive a discreet border-crossing transponder code from ATC before you cross there should be alarm bells going off in your head.

Re: Canada

I came up last year with Ted of Fly2AK.com He is indeed the man with all the details worked out.
We crossed at SweetGrass and it was a complete non-event. With all procedures in place we landed, called in on the phone, got cleared, watered the bushes and were in the air withing fifteen minutes.

Watch for smoke and for sudden weather changes,

Good luck

Thank you Shane. Your comments are very much appreciated.

I’ll give you a holler in 10 days or so. I’m headed up. I need to check out your rebuilt deck!
