Cargo Pod

What or who's cargo pod is this. It looks the same shape as the Cessna pod but shallower. Less capacity but also less drag I would assume? It's attached to an earlier model 180 which is also interesting.

I'd bet money that's a Cessna Pod. I have one...
I agree the photo makes it look shallower... maybe an optics thing.
SkyCraft Pod = 10 cubic feet. Cessna/AeroPod Style = 18 cubic feet.

I know the Cessna Pod was only certified for the 180/185 starting at a certain serial number.
Maybe, as the photo is of an early 180, it was a pod built but no longer available.
Tony Lopez's AeroPod is only certified for the 185's.

Aerocet purchased the Alaska SkyCraft Pod.
They will be selling a new and improved (lighter/better construction/more expensive) pod by years end.
The build quality will be along the lines of their floats and it will be a bit lighter (35 to 37 pounds).
It will be the same dimensions as the SkyCraft Pod and they say the price should be $3700 +/- $100.

Jamie, I'm going to be in New Zealand in February dropping some folks off then heading over to Sydney.
If we stay a night or two, maybe you could point us towards a good watering hole :)

Re: Cargo Pod

Last time I was in the Lopez hangar I believe they still had one (or two) laying around. I can get you in contact with them if you need more info.

I think you are right that its an optical illusion now I have had another look. The colour and the fact its on 29's make it look shallower. I have a copy of a Cessna Pod on our 75 180 that are made down here with a top on them and six turnbuckles to strap it on. Can take it on and off in 15 minutes and makes the pod more water proof but heavier at 66lb with the top. The top also protects the belly of the plane from scratchs. I didnt think the Cessna Pod was approved on the earlier 180's (pre third window /185 fuse).
I am a cattle rancher down country from the big smoke. You wouldnt approve of my local watering hole I dont think. If you have more than a few days you are more than welcome to come visit.

Re: Cargo Pod

Hell, I said a "good" watering hole!
I've drank beer with a few cows before :)

I'll learn more about the trip the closer it gets.

Thanks

Re: Cargo Pod

Does anyone have any insight on the status of the old Alaskan Skycraft pods that were taken over by Aerocet? Seems like they have been a long time coming and I'm still on the waiting list. Anyone know of any other current pod options for a c-180?

We were excited to heli in Silverton — until we saw the bird. Looking like something your stoner uncle built in the garage out of four Meccano sets, a fish tank, and an AMC Pacer, this helicopter seats a pilot plus two only, making it a tricky vehicle, logistics-wise, when your group has 8 people in it.
