Re: Carry an Emergency Tool Kit? - What's in your Bag or Box

wow...so i live in idaho right....?! and u guys have some great stuff going on there!
after thinking about it, about all i can do in the back-country should problems arise, is this...

1...fix a flat tire...yup tubes and such and air...tires are a piece of cake...as ive done it all over the place on all kinds of vehicles...by hand...easiest prob. to have...
2...my SPOT is hooked to all my close pals...they are my biggest asset if it all goes to hell!!
3...i could camp a while if needed...
4...if im not hurt, i would be quite comfortable...
5...back to the spot...we have found even in the middle of 4 million acres, response time is pretty damn quik....
6...so maybe being in a rut and spending most of my time in idaho is a good thing! but if we launch to alaska or such, i will be quite a bit better prepared...or would I...?!
7...ive found that one of my best resources is having a world class mechanic help me take care of my bird...he knows where i go, and how i feel about engine/oil issues and is always watching out for me...highly valuable guy and a great 180 pilot...
SO...i am still thinking a page out of u guys book would be a good thing...need to think on that one a bit...thanks for the info!

So funny as I was going through my tool kit today in preparation for getting the plane back this week.

Do folks carry tube sealant with them or jacks to take the tire off and change out a tube?

On a trip to Columbia, California my tail wheel went flat. I borrowed a bottle jack from the owner of the Columbia Inn Motel. Not a backcountry repair but, I was stoked to meet a cool dude that could help.

Sometimes being a bum takes skill! Not hard for me.

Here is my tire pump:

Tire sealant is also carried theses days:

Sometimes, I carry a jumpstart start battery. It also has a universal 12v connection I,e. To charge sat phone.

Also, when on floats and in remote marinas fuel jugs are in my toolkit:

The basic hand tools as suggested, my leatherman, a gallon of water and a pocket of a couple hundred bucks in crisp 5,10, and 20's. It's embarrassing when someone goes out of their way to help you and all you have is a credit card.

Duplicate or not, it's great to rehash subjects like this to make you reassess what is in your own kit and to get new ideas of things to add, or subtract. I do think this would make a great knowledge base article!

I'm probably on the a little on the overkill side. Basic hand tools, duct tape, tire sealant, jack, jack plate, safety wire, electric wire and connector kit, jump cables for my plane, tubes for tires, volt meter, spare plugs, spark plug socket, torque wrench, battery jumper...that's all I can remember off the top of my head. All in all about 40#s.

I need to get a come along put in. Also a friend suggested brake fluid and a way to repair brake lines.

I figure a take-along airplane tool kit is like a pocketknife-- if you *always* have it, then you'll never be stuck somewhere without it. The inverse of Murphys Law dictates that if you have it, you'll never need it.

BTW besides what I already listed in an earlier post, I also carry a spare inner tube for my 850x6 mains and a spare t/w tire & tube. I figure the average airport might (might!) have a 600x6 tube around, but other than that (or off airport) you'd be shit out of luck. I used to carry a small bottle jack, but somehow it quit working-- maybe from being carried lying on it's side?

Re: Carry an Emergency Tool Kit? - What's in your Bag or Box

I took a picture of mine while at the hangar today:

My emergency tool kit is pretty robust and weighs right at 10 lbs. Its actually just my tool kit, a collection of tools I use most often thrown into a bag. As I need something else I'll put it in the kit and if I find I haven't used something at all I might take it out. Later. Maybe.

Here's the kit:
Image
It's got some survival stuff in it too, like my hatchet and 4 film camera roll containers of gunpowder/magnesium firestarters my friend made for me.

Here's the rest of the stuff I carry when I fly that I wouldn't classify as "tool kit":

Image
That's an Army Improved First Aid Kit, oil, and tie downs.

After reading this and some other recent threads, I've determined I need to add some stuff (like duct tape for one. How does any good rag and tube flying pilot NOT carry duct tape?!) to my tool kit and I need to build a survival vest for backcountry flying.

The little yellow funnel is for topping off the landing gear hydraulic reservoir. Hydraulics have been pretty tight, only a few small drops which required fittings to be re-torqued. Also, had a pinched "O" ring on the backup hand pump.

WD40 is a good cleaner: Oil, exhaust stains, bugs, duct tape residue, brake dust etc.

Re: Carry an Emergency Tool Kit? - What's in your Bag or Box

I really appreciate all the discussion in this thread, I've put together my own toolkit based on this information.

As far as fasteners go, aside from sheet metal screws for inspection covers and such, what other fasteners do you guys have in your kits? Are there any particular fasteners that are susceptible to being damaged or lost as a result of common off-airport maintenance activities?

Thanks

What would you consider to be "common bolts?"

Re: Carry an Emergency Tool Kit? - What's in your Bag or Box

Lately I have kept my big rolling toolbox at my house and have been using my portable tool bag that I keep in my car to work on the airplane. It's actually been nice because it's shown me what I ACTUALLY use and need to keep in the plane. This tool bag is what I take in the plane on trips.

I also keep an organizer like dogpilot's with common screws/bolts and cotter pins.. All of the bolts are used AN's that have come off the airplane at one point or another and while I wouldn't want to replace bolts with used on a regular basis, they are good enough for emergency use. Most of the machine screws and sheet metals screws are leftovers from a Cessna stainless screw kit I bought when I had the 180. #6 through #10 are pretty darn common in airplanes...

In addition to the other stuff that's already mentioned, I keep an old alternator belt in case the current one breaks while I'm on the road somewhere.
