Carrying snow skis

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Funny you guys bring this up, I was just wondering if I can squeeze my skis into my 170 if I install the extended baggage STC? I need about 6 feet to fit them, and I run without the rear seat installed.

Prob a simple Google search on the extended baggage STC details, but maybe one of you knows off the top of your head.

Just run 140's like when you were a kid Zane... You don't need them long skis in powder... :D

It think you're right Brad. I need my "flyin" skis. That, or a big belly pod.

I wonder if there is a "Ski Tube" available for the 170? I've seen them advertised for other aircraft. :?:

Marc,

Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous
But to an even greater degree than the sea,
it is terribly unforgiving of any
carelessness, incapacity, or neglect.

Just put the 170 on the skis. Best of both worlds and you won't have to buy lift tickets

Zane,

I have the Selkirk extended baggage. I'll try to get out there today or tomorrow to measure. I think a "normal" set of skis will fit.

As to "ski tubes" otherwise known as "fishing pole tubes", I don't know of any of those that have been stc'd, so you'd either have to one time STC, field approve, or find a mechanic brave enough to sign off as a minor alteration. If you find one of them, send me his name, I got work for him.

A less responsible person than me might suggest a temporary bootleg ski-tube installation for your weekend skiing trip: tie-wrap it in place saturday morning and cut it loose sunday night. Don't ask, don't tell.

But most of all, make darn sure it doesn't get involved somehow with all the control cables/bellcranks, etc that live and work in the back end of that machine of yours.

This is one place that needs some careful consideration before launching into it as a "Homebuilt".

I can show you the graves of three gents who got something just like this tangled up in the elevator controls of their aircraft.

Had to split this so we didn't hijack the types thread.

If I do carry them I'd like them to be secure so they don't bash the shit out of the edges of the bulkhead. I've been back there when I was cleaning and Boeshielding, so I know how easy it can be to get something tangled up in the important goodies.

Mike- Do get back to me on the Selkirk depth. I'm very interested. Thanks.

In my wandering mind, which is beyond the realm of the FAA and common sense, I can see a few ways to Joad the skis to the fuselage externally. Make a guy wish for amphibs.

I have the Selkirk x baggage its about 6 ft from the back of the baggage to the rear door post . So with the seats forward in the flight position should have nearly 7 ft. There's enough room for me to leave the seat all the way forward and sleep back there and I'm 6'4".

Have the Selkirk in the 182B and have had two kayaks (the short variety) in the plane.

hauling skis

With my Stinson 108 I can just run the skis right in one side window and out the other, gives me something to rest my chin on.

Haha. Well if it came down to it, I'd have the tips resting on top of the panel. I like the kayaks in the 182, that's sweet.

With the back seat out I can fit a pair of 205's crosswise across the cabin floor of the Maule. The tips stick out from under the front of the front seat just a couple of inches.

The rear bulkhead cover unclips or 2 screws in the back of the Maule and I can put four sets of skis and poles on the floor under the rear seat and protruded into the tail cone using a cushion to keep them well clear of cables and battery and tie them forward to prevent any chance of slip back. !.2 hours to Truckee or Taho ski areas with four skiers and back by evening.

I thought everyone had gone small, 165cm or shorter. I'm happy to hear Strata, that someone is still moving around on some speed machines, 205's yeehaa!
