He was probably just trying to get away from the wolves. Poor bastard took a wrong turn I guess.

Re: Cat on runway

Back in the days before they put the damn tower in there, it wouldn't have been that big of deal. At least as big of a deal for the cougar. All the fencing they have now complicated it's removal I'd guess. I used to land there and open the gate at the N end of the runway and push my Kitfox (wings folded) across the road to the gas station that used to be there, don't think I'd get away with that now, probably end up like the cat.

I think they were wrong to kill the cat.

Re: Cat on runway

I don't see any reason for them to have killed the cat.

Scare it away from the runway and let the plane land, then you have all the time you need to get rid of it.

Re: Cat on runway

I've heard "be advised, coyote on the runway" on the radio at my airport many a time, never worried too much about hitting it.
IMHO coyotes are pretty smart critters.
I've seen coons, weasels, dogs, cats, and a lotta deer dead alongside the road, but never a coyote.
I don't know if a cougar is as smart as a coyote, but I've never seen one of them road-killed either.

In Ellensburg there's a Coyote that likes to sit off to the side at the approach end of the runway and watch the planes takeoff and land.

Re: Cat on runway

Years ago, I was taxiing down the parallel at my airport and a coyote was sitting on it up ahead of me.
He watched me come on, then trotted into the grass and stopped to watch me go by.
I taxied off into the grass right after him and gunned the engine--
really startled him, took him a few seconds to decide to run for it.
Guess nobody ever did that to him before!

I have nothing against coyote hunters, whether they do it for sport or to protect their livestock,
but I really like seeing coyotes around.
They're highly adaptable, can eke out a living just about anywhere, and are real survivors.

Re: Cat on runway

We get hundreds of bear, moose, lynx, and other critters on our runway, but have never shot one yet. They can make for some interesting take offs and landings at times, but seem to know when to get out of the way. Cubs can get a little confused though...

Maybe if someone took that kid for a ride, he might go on to become an airline pilot.

We've got one at the work airfield too, but he only likes to take a dump in the middle of F taxiway at night.
