cataclysmic volcano erupted @ Hunga Tonga

Deplaned (HA17) in Honolulu right in the middle of a tsunami warning. Luckily my little boat and the marina were not harmed.

Manele Harbor, Lanai had a surge. No tsunami but, definitely weird waves and currents.

Re: cataclysmic volcano erupted @ Hunga Tonga

My wife woke me up at about 4 am on Saturday and asks me if I heard that noise. I say “no” and tell her that it’s probably the cats running around the house or something. She tells me it’s not the cats. Then I hear it too…..a faint boom with a shudder. 15 seconds later I hear/feel another one. Hard to explain what it is at the time so I figure it’s some heavy equipment banging around (maybe a snow plow truck) a couple blocks away although my mind acknowledges that the noise is of a quality that I’ve never really heard before. We live in Soldotna, AK.

Then my wife has lunch with her friend later that afternoon who tells her that her dogs were going crazy at 4 am and that there were some sort of low frequency booms that were the cause of their anxiety. They agree that they both heard the same thing. Interestingly, our friends live 20 miles away from us in Nikiski, AK.

This morning, my wife can’t sleep and wakes me up to show me this. https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/science/2022/01/15/volcano-eruption-near-tonga-causes-booms-heard-by-alaskans-nearly-6000-miles-away/ She makes a point to tell me that I was wrong about the cats. I must say that it is one of the more interesting things that I’ve experienced. 6,000 miles away? Geez, we are insignificant specks of dust floating around in this universe.

Re: cataclysmic volcano erupted @ Hunga Tonga

Thanks for the first hand experience Squash. Closest I experienced to something like that was in Dec 1994 when the nitrogen plant south of Sioux City blew up. I was still in bed in the old farm house I was living in and the windows rattled a little bit that calm morning. I thought maybe some snow slid off the roof but that really didn't make sense. I was 57 miles away as the crow flies.

An interesting article on the Hunga Tonga shock wave being recorded from both great circle directions in New England:

Re: cataclysmic volcano erupted @ Hunga Tonga

It maybe my imagination and some paranoia but it seems the waves and currents in the middle of the Pacific are still a bit unusual. A sneaky wave just rapped in my anchorage. It is winter however and we are expecting 30+ foot waves on Friday from the North.

Re: cataclysmic volcano erupted @ Hunga Tonga

After a spooky dark night at anchor (+7 days after the Hunga Tonga eruption)… I said a prayer for safe passage to the fishing grounds. The eruption forevermore changed the Pacific and it reminded me of the power(s) of the natural world(s).

I grabbed the Sony A3 camera and documented Thursday on the water (yesterday), my fear slowly went away and life feels normal again:

5344.6 miles in Santa Cruz Harbor, California. Never anchor or moor stern into a strong wind and/or current with low freeboard!

That's my buddy's boat in Santa Cruz harbor. It got pulled down by the dock it was tied to. It's already been pulled out, checked and put back in the water with no damage. Tough boat and good guy!

Re: cataclysmic volcano erupted @ Hunga Tonga

I arrived in Hiva Oa, Marquesas after a 26 day passage from Mexico one or two days after the Japanese Tsunami. We were unable to enter the harbour for twelve hours as the resulting tide was effectively cycling in and out of the harbour about every twenty minutes, with about an eight foot range. The current in the harbour entrance made a waterfall. Cold beer has never felt so close yet so far away.

Powerful stuff.

Glad you navigated safely! What kind of vessel? Would love to have more details…

Tartan 37 sailboat. It was a family trip from BC to Mexico and then to Brisbane. Last big trip with our kids who were 13 and 15. Great memories. Sold the boat in Australia and came home and both learnt to fly and bought the 170 for less than boat sale. Try and do that today!

Wow! How did you like the Tartan 37 sailboat? What kind of self steering? Did you stop at Pago Pago?

I’m heading to the Seattle boat show (9 day pass — 4-FEB) then Miami Boat show (17-FEB). Also, touring the Catalina Yachts factory Wednesday afternoon after the show in Seminole, FL.

Aloha!

Awesome boat. Fin keel, skeg hung rudder. When I go again Ill just buy the best one of those that I can find (Deep keel version only).

A monitor, with a tillerpilot to drive the wind paddle in calm/motoring.

We did the classic route, Marquesas, Tuamotus, Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, Cook Islands, Beveridge reef, Nouvelle Caledonie and Brisbane.

The best piece of advice I can give is to leave early, there has never been a hurricane in the Marquesas. We left 14 Feb. Jimmy Cornell sends everyone else off in April. Then you are ahead of everyone. We had three weeks in Marquesas and two in Tuamotus.

Thank you for the information! The biggest boat I can purchase (right now) needs to be under 38’ LOA (including windvane, pulpit, etc.). My slip limits the LOA. If you know of a Tartan for sale, please let me know!!!

Sounds like you were very close to Hunga Tonga crossing to Fiji eh? I’ll buy you a cup of coffee, if you get down to the boat show!

Do you know Brent Swain in Comox?

Aloha!!

After almost (2)+ years of searching for a boat, purchased a Beneteau 30.1 — Goal is to sail it to Hawaii (solo) and then further south. I’m going to have to lose 15 lbs and start working out in the gym!

Definitely one of the largest on earth.

The caldera measures 43 by 28 miles (70 by 45 kilometers), and postcaldera lavas spill out a significant distance beyond the caldera proper.[4]

You guys from Alaska have a one track mind! The Tuamotu Islands are 2700 NM from Oahu! Will be trolling Kona lures!

Note: It has a nice top loading freezer/frig

Also, might try sailing the inland waterways to Glacier Bay this summer! Let me know if you guys need another BFR in your tail dragger? You have a nice car I can borrow again? ha Ha…
