I'm in, save a cave for me if any left. Otherwise I'll camp.

Re: Caveman 2014?

What is all this cave talk? You need to be out in the red dirt to have the whole Caveman experience. You will always remember your time at Caveman Ranch, because that red dirt will always be on your stuff. :D

Re: Caveman 2014?

I haven't heard much from Rod in regards to the May flyin. I know he is involved in some personal issues. I would say you can probly draw a line through the Caveman flyin for this spring. We had talked that maybe the issues could be resolved soon and plans could be started for a fall flyin.?????
Keep your fingers crossed for Rod and his family.
If anything changes I will let you know, but from this point it would be pretty short notice and probly tough plan for many.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Re: Caveman 2014?

Thanks for the update Gary and all the work you have put into this (now and in the past).

I hope it's nothing too serious and if the Tangren's need anything, they know this community will stand by them.

Fall is a GREAT time of year for a UT fly-in and I hope it happens. :)

Hey, I have an idea. I don't think I'm the only one who planned a vacation around a Caveman Ranch fly-in, there are usually a bunch of people from different places. (Okay, I do it the chicken way and stay in a motel in Moab, but I'm still hanging around and flying the back-country airstrips around there.) Maybe we can still show up, just not at Caveman. Pick a few airstrips and say, "Yeah, we'll meet in and around Mineral Canyon, Hidden Splendor, Happy Canyon, wherever for 2014 May 16-18." Make it an unoffical fly-in.

Re: Caveman 2014?

If we picked another weekend, I'm in. Perhaps Ladd would host us at Mack Mesa? We could also camp out at Delores Pt.

Re: Caveman 2014?

I'm fairly sure Ladd would welcome a Fly-in on the original Caveman dates. (16th - 18th)
Plenty of available free camping. Fuel on site. And lots of decent backcountry strips near-by.
There's even some available hangar space if you don't want your hangar queen outside overnight.
There's a whole slew of lightly used strips up on the Bookcliffs. Willow Flats has a ton of parking and camping spots and is a long way from any city light source so the night skies are awesome.

Re: Caveman 2014?

Not to stray too far off topic, but the last time I looked at Willow Flats (two or three years ago) it looked pretty bumpy, at least for my standard-tires Cherokee. Is it smoother now? Have you been into Moon Ridge or Steer Ridge? Moon Ridge looked good, just short and high, but downhill, while I would like a report from the ground about Steer Ridge. I'd like to go in, but I need that extra level of reconnaissance with a PA28 that I wouldn't need with a Husky or a big-tires Cub. Thanks.

Re: Caveman 2014?

Willow flats is long smooth and wide. It is by far the best of the bunch. It also has a cross strip that is long as well but it has a bit of terrain change to it. Moon is the next best but be careful of the camp site on the southern end. Someone put a fire ring right in the middle of the runway about 30 feet from the end. Steer is fine for most planes. All of them are smoother and longer than Mexican Mountain. The big issue with all of them is Altitude. High DA's in the summer. About the same as Dolores. There are several more strips close by. PR Springs is the hardest of the bunch as it is the highest and the narrowest. Really narrow at the southern end.
I haven't been up there yet this year but I hope to get there this weekend weather permitting.
I have videos of most of the Bookcliff strips on this site in the "where did you fly today" thread.

Re: Caveman 2014?

S-12Flyer, my email is [email protected] and I have http://the-adam.com/stuff/movie/list.html videos of my own, including fly-by videos of Moon Ridge, Steer Ridge, and Willow Flat. A few years ago, Willow Flat had lots of deep ruts, or so I thought viewing the video (#274). Thanks a lot for your help and let's take this "offline" so people following the real thread here don't have to endure our conversation about the Book Cliffs, which I'm enjoying so heartily.https://vimeo.com/39313480
