Cessna 170 with Wing-X

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Re: Cessna 170 with Wing-X

Bumping this thread.
Anyone with real world experience/data flying their 170 with the Wing X mod? Would love to hear feedback.
Also, the STC calls to placard the limitation of using only 20deg flaps at gross, I’m interested in understanding the reason for the limits, assuming additional stress on the wings but I’d like to learn more from the gurus. Thanks

Re: Cessna 170 with Wing-X

The WingX in the 170 gives a minimal GW bump. The 20 degree limitation is only at "max gross," which is 2250 rather than 2200. Presuming you start at Max, then fly 45min, you should never have to worry. Others may know more specifically about the structural implications, but I think you're way down in the weeds as you are far from a stock wing. LOL. WingX, LR fuel tanks, Sportsman, VGs, Quasar tips... your gonna be a bit of a test pilot on D-day.

Whats the worst that can happen?

Interesting question though...

That all makes sense. Don't plan to be the test pilot, someone I know volunteered.
Back to the question though.... how about some feedback on flight characteristics? Anyone?

Re: Cessna 170 with Wing-X

I added Wing-X to my ‘55 170 w/O-360, Sportsman Stol and VG’s.
I have 30 hours flying it now. I am very happy with how the plane flies.
Roll rate is slower and requires more input but I like that it feels more like a 180/185 now.
Seems more stable in chunky air.
Takes off quicker, rate of climb is higher, flies slower and stalls much more docile.
Yes it is an expensive modification but I removed the Flint Tip Tanks I had and sold them for 1/2 of what it cost for the kit and install.
I rarely used the tip tanks. They were on the plane when I bought it. Good for airport to airport flying in the lower 48 but not so much in Alaska.
There is no downside as far as I’m concerned.

Greg that's good news. I'm happy you've got some time back on your bird and your happy with the mod. Sounds like it performs as advertised. I'll be running the wing X with sportsman and VG's as well. Can't wait for the test flight.

Good to hear the wing extensions are positive. I installed Flint tanks in my 170 right after I bought it, and really liked them, though like you, I certainly didn't use them every flight. But, in the interior of AK, that extra fuel can come in handy, especially for out and backs. Sounds like you've got yours set up the way you want it, and that's what counts.
