FWIW I kinda hate seeing this "bought to resell" business. A lot of times it's someone doing it that already has plenty of money, it's not like they need the dough. All it does is run the price of airplanes up. I remember at one time Joe Stancil seemed to have spotters all over the country, and he was buying up all the 180's that came up for sale by having a ready cash & lowballing the eager-to-sell owners. Then he'd mark them up and resell them. IMHO all by himself he ran the average price of a good C180 up $10-20K across the country. The result was that I went from sorta maybe being able to afford a 180, to "no way"-- and I'm still mad about it.

This is how I feel about the market since I've been watching it, I'm in no rush to buy but it's frustrating to watch to say the least. I've pretty well decided to buy a Maule and eat a few years of high insurance over a 180 at this point, the 180 price just seems inflated for what you're getting. $60-$75k buys a flying project 180 or a good Maule, and $85k buys a good 180 or a great/"newish" Maule. This is only how I feel about my needs though, different strokes and whatnot.

The market seems to be correcting itself for 180's though, lots of $75k flying projects seem to be listed for a long time and are slowly dropping in price, and the ones priced correctly at $75-$85k are still selling in a week or less.

There are still some good deals out there. Remember, asking prices are not necessarily selling prices. I bought a nice 53 model last fall for $62K- 1100 smoh, good clean straight airframe, and several good mods. Look up the original thread about quickdraw's cousins 180-- it looked like a good one, even at the new "bought to resell" price of $60K.

I just tried to look up quickdraw's post / thread about that 180 for sale- some discussion sites have a "view posts by this member" feature but BCP doesn't appear to, or else I'm just too caveman to figure it out. IMHO that'd be a good feature to add, Zane, in case you're listening.

I remember reading here about one that posted about the 180 and it's value. It made me really look at how the true market really shows how a 55 year old airplane can hold it's value. If I were able to go spend 60-75K plus on a airplane I would want it's value to hold, like water front property would. I would also look for a later model one with refined improvements. Same as say a 170, not many want a 1948 rag wing or A but look for a B model. Also look in off the wall adds that someone would not look at daily. They are out there, you just have to look real hard.
