Cessna 185 VFR panel update

Friends,

While not an all out transformation like many of the talented folks on here, I wanted to start documenting some updates to my stock 185F. This plane is a '75 model with a little over 2000 hours on it. It has amazingly made it 41 years with only two STC's. It has an aftermarket fuel drain and 8.50's.

One of the reasons I bought this one is that after two other 180's, with various levels of mods, I felt like the best plane for me was a late model wing with a big motor. Factory extended baggage, 1490 useful load, etc. Like any good airplane nut though, I've found some things that need to be updated and yes....modifications. I live in Houston and have had the plane for a little over a year. In that year I've had a chance to fly it just over 100 hours, with two trips to Idaho. It performed great as is, but like I said it could be better. So, first up was doing something about the panel. Pretty much everything worked but the newest thing in the plane wad a loran from the 80's.

Basic plan; pull out all the Nixon-era radio navigation plus the loran, ADF and indicators. Get rid of all the wires and antennas. Patch the holes. Install a single new Garmin com, an air gizmos mount for my 796, add PTT switches, plug all the panel empty space, add an intercom for all seats. Also planned to retain one com antenna to plug into for my hand held back up. Pics to come shortly.

For those interested, mid term plan in the next few months is to upgrade/update more things on the airframe. Sort of general list:
--update the stock McCauley wheels and brakes
--go through the stock tail wheel... Maybe upgrade to the baby BW fork.
--firewall battery
--flat baggage floor
--interior (Big Time!)
--upgrade the stock 86" two blade

Bill

Re: Cessna 185 VFR panel update

Looks great. I'm in the same boat as far as panel update/upgrade needs. Don't forget to consider ADBS out at least. I'm going the route of a WAAS Nav/com so I can get ADSB in and out. Free weather in the cockpit is hard to turn down. Makes me a safer VFR pilot.....

Thanks to all so far for the suggestions and kind comments.

The list below is an "appendix" of great ideas that have come from board members so far:

--Shoulder harnesses
--pull handles
--Rosen Sun visors
--Address ADSB

On types of wheels to go to...lots of options and opinions; Rest assured they will be new and made of aluminum, magnesium and from Airframes or Cleveland and 3 or 6 bolt!!

Pic from today....TRONS ARE FLOWING!

Re: Cessna 185 VFR panel update

Look into the navworx for ADSB, it's a all in one box that works with any mode C, had built in WAAS, ADSB wx and traffic, wifi options for iPads etc, also, biggest factor for me, throughs a random code when ever it's set to 1200, so you're not broadcasting your N number every time your transponder is on, better for safety and privacy.

Re: Cessna 185 VFR panel update

Fiftynine,
I'm wondering how you are liking the combo after a few months.

I recognize the 796, but I can't tell which model of radio.

I'm about to make some decisions on updating my own panel. Getting rid of all the IFR stuff and thinning the radio herd.

My AME has raved about the 796 but I can't really tell what it does that an Ipad with Foreflight does not. Warren Buffet advised never to ask a barber if you need a haircut, so I'm taking his advice with a grain of salt.

I'd like a good intercom/audio, one radio, and I already have a good Garmin transponder so really the 796 is the big question mark.

I would recommend going the PAR200 route. Radio intercom audio panel all in one with be tooth connectivity. As for te 796, I love mine. But I have terrible luck with apple products so I don't trust ipads.

Uh oh, you started it now.

Can't wait to see what else you decide to do. Great airplane, you'll love the updates. But a couple of years later don't be surprised if you start thinking "hmm, maybe I should do it again to change this or that". But it's all fun. :D

It's been great so far. I have not had a chance to take it on a long trip yet though, the family and i have just finished moving to a new city and all that associated stuff. Just put the plane in a new hangar last week, so I will get some final (better) pictures as well as posting my weight loss. It was approximately 25 lbs, but I'll get the final number. I know if put my useful load up over 1500 lbs, not that it matters for me much. I have a crappy cell pic below.

The radio is a Garmin 225....best part of the deal. The dual channel monitor function really makes it handy and pretty much eliminates "MY" need for a second radio.

On the 796... I already had the unit so adding the gizmos mount was a no brainer. I use the 796 as my primary GPS and an IPAD mini as my back up. The 796 is nice and bright, no glare issues. The ipad mini with foreflight is the best for flight planning.

Again, sorry for the poor quality...I'll get some proper ones this weekend.

Words of wisdom. :D

Pretty happy with the panel so far, so this winter I'm focusing on the airframe stuff. Getting rid of the McCauley wheels and brakes, new windshield, go through the tailwheel and stinger, clean and strip the gear, new brake lines.

Still looking at doing the blimp tires too...so if you know a guy with a 337 that would be cool!! :D
