Another option to consider is a C207. IF, you're not going backcountry short and high.

More room than a C206, as in big enough to sleep comfortably with the seats out. Nose baggage for even more space. And it's a genuine six place airplane, though why I'd want to carry six people anywhere is beyond me!!!

And a there's huge difference in the landing gear. A 207 will play all day in winds that would have a C206 on it's back. I don't know many, if any, AK 206's that haven't been blown over while taxiing. I have never heard of that happening to a 207.

Performance? I'd put a good strong 206 up against any 185 carrying the same load. Takeoff or land.

Need a tailwheel? Really? Why and where? There was a fuel haul going on, and they were using a 185, cause "a 206 couldn't land there". They took the gear out of the 185. I went in with a bigger load in a 206 a couple days later. That strip was rough, but the 206 was a far better airplane for that strip in any case. We had a big nose fork and an 8.00 nose tire, 8.50 mains.

I agree with pretty much everything that's been said here, except the 206 will GENERALLY be a little faster at the same fuel burn in my experience. Part of that is 185's start fast, but slow down as you add tabs for skis, floats, etc.

If you want a fire breathing back country load hauler, find a good 206 with the IO 550. You can go to 3800 GW in a 206 with the 550 or one with wing extensions.

185 cockpit is a LOT smaller, width and length.

The 185 is NOT, in my opinion, a 6 place airplane under almost any circumstance.

We lost our 185, which I had flown over 3000 hours. My boss wanted me to provide an assessment of the relative benefits of 185 vs 206 for replacement. I did a fair job, and much to my dismay, they picked a U206F with a 550. It took me about one flight to realize how much better an airplane that thing was than the 185, in so many ways.

Landing in 40 knot gusting winds? 206 = no sweat 185 = go somewhere else.

A good 206 may be hard to find, but they're out there. Lots of them around that have sat a lot and not been working airplanes, if you look around. I have the feeling, however, you'll find prices pretty strong on 206s.

Good luck.

Mike I have to agree with you on this one. You hit the nail on the head this time. C206 is in my opinion the best all around single engine Cessna ever made. But Gump is correct the 207 was an Air Taxi $$$ maker for a wheel operation airport to airport. I did fly a C207 on skis once after Atlee Jr. worked on it for 3 days #-o He replaced nose gear, 3 ft of each wing and prop. One of Vanderpools kids left in the toolies. Guess I needed $$$ more back in those days

Re: Cessna 206 vs. 185

I have a little time in a 206 on wheels and own a 1980-185. I would not want to spend much time in the 2nd seat of the 185 and wish the cabin was wider. Loading cargo would be a dream in the 206 compared to the 185. I needed a load hauler and choose the 185, because of it's edge of getting off the water/ski flying, take that out of the equation and I would have been flying a 206 or converted my 182 to floats and put in a real engine. My vote would be the 206 because of comfort and room for your application. Steve

Atlee bought it from the insurance co. for $12,000. Paid me $1500 to fly it back to Anc and he sold it for $30,000 the next day =D> Easy to make $$$ in Alaska
