The water box is literally 50 yards way, and another old one at the north end of the N/S strip, and another old, abandoned but functional one for some old troughs that were there 35 years ago at the west end of the E/W strip.

Re: Chamberlain Basin - Camping

The water spigot on the south side of the USFS cabin still works. They have posted it with a sign saying the water has not been tested, but it is fine to use. And, the USFS did remove/burn the great sign with the hand-carved topo map and story of the Basin. They also burned the old sweat lodge that was up Flossie Creek about a 1/4 mile (that hardly anybody knew was there!). It was a great piece of the basin's history.

Just ordered “Bound For The Backcountry” by Richard Holm and is a history
from day one on the early Idaho Backcountry flying with some great photos.
Very good!

You can Google for "Tales from the last of the Big Creek rangers" for a good yarn and some decent pictures as well. Several people we knew or met from back then are mentioned, aside from Dodds himself.

Thanks *a lot* for this recommendation. Just started it. Looks like it's right up my alley!

Another posted mentioned "Bound for the Backcountry". I'd like to second that recommendation. I love browsing through that during the winter and remembering the strips I've camped, and those to should consider next.

Re: Chamberlain Basin - Camping

Chamberlain is one of my favorite places to camp.

The water at the guard station is good. Or at least I don’t have the shits two weeks later.
