Nizina , nice looking floor. One of the things on living here in Alaska one has to learn to improvise.

So right. And nothing gets done overnight. It took me several seasons to buy, transport, stockpile, and finally construct my hangar. A lot of hard work, but I'm happy with the results. And not everything worked the first time -- especially the foundation.

I started with compacted sand and gravel (2,000 yards of it hauled five miles over a winter cat trail) for the base, then a vapor barrier. I put the 4"x4" -- 12' treated grade-beams directly on top of the vapor barrier and place the 4 inches of blueboard in between the grade-beams that were on two foot centers. I then screwed 3/4" treated T&G plywood on top of the grade beams, and then a second course of 1/2" plywood on top of that. And then I painted it to look like concrete. So basically the grade-beams are floating on top of the compacted sand and gravel and all is held together with the two coursed of plywood. It is very sturdy and the blueboard has prevented any winter buckling.

Bill, Terry made a good point. Don't use Blast furnace Slag. It is dirty and darker. You want 4120 (1/4 inch minus) or 4133 (3/8 minus). Blast furnace slag does swell when wet and it will raise floors.

If you want a really cheap floor, use old carpet. An old guy I know puts it all over his back yard to keep weeds down and he said some of it was over ten years old. That's sitting outside too. You should be able to pick up some pretty good commercial carpet when one of the casino's remodels down there.

Carpet sounds good, as long as your hangar doors shut tight. I rented the Emmett City hangar for a month and it had old carpet laid down inside the hangar. It smelled like cat piss and cat crap was all over it when I moved in. Pretty gross! Plus, the 182 was hard to push in and out of the hangar with the carpet. Glad I moved out of that hell hole quick!!
