Child seat recommendations

Just curious to see anyone has used something awesome.

I'm looking for a child seat for my one and half year old kiddo. Her infant car seat worked well, but shes too big for that now. And our current car seat is pretty big and clumsy.

Mostly be going into a 180 jump seat and citabria.

Thanks

Re: Child seat recommendations

For airplanes I like the Cosco (not Costco) Finale. It’s super lightweight and goes in/comes out easily. $50 at Walmart.

We’ve since upgraded to Britax boosters as our kids are 8 and 6, but we did use the Coscos in the car for a while, despite me buying them specifically for airplanes.

We have used a pair of these for carrying our twins in the back of the skywagon since they were about 2. They are almost six now and they are holding up great.

They are pretty spendy, but a very nice design that folds up neatly. Easy to spray barf off of as well =D>

Re: Child seat recommendations

We used my 180 frequently for traveling starting when our son was about two. First, we used a high-backed booster in the backseat. As he grew we moved that to the front seat, and then when he grew out of that we put him in a booster seat in the front seat with the aircraft harness as his restraint. There was an awkward age in there where he was too big for a booster seat but still not tall enough to be protected by the shoulder harness, so he had to go back to the back seat for a while. He's a teen now, and when he flies with me (which isn't very often) he sits in the front seat like any other person.

My wife used to be a certified car seat installer, so she had some strong opinions about putting our son in the 180. Her certification has lapsed, but she offers this advice:

"An appropriate car seat is one that fits your child best based on her weight, height and your vehicle or in this situation plane. She absolutely needs a 5 point harness system and good head and neck protection. (No particular brand but some brands might fit better in your plane.) This of course needs to be installed most likely with a locking clip to your aircraft belt system. Are you planning on just using this seat in your plane? If so, the Recaro high backed booster with a built in harness system might work. It is usually more narrow than some of the bulkier convertible seats. The Britax grow with you seat also tends to be more narrow. We also found that our son’s seat fit better in the front seat because of smaller width seats in the back. The Diono convertible car seat also tends to be more of a chair style seat so it might be a good option. Smaller base and larger at top for protection. Good luck!"

I also bought him a child's headset. He refused to wear that. At the time, I had a Bose X ANR headset for me and used passive Peltor headsets for passengers. Of course, the only one he'd wear was the Bose so I had to buy another one of those too (used, on eBay, of course).

I hope y'all have fun and build a lot of memories! We had some great trips in those days, and the time goes fast.

I really like these. One of the most annoying issues with car seats is their bulkiness, when really the main objective is to get the restraint in alignment. The only thing I don’t see with those Wayb ones is some boost. One advantage of a booster in addition to aligning the shoulder harness, is giving them a better view out the window :)

Re: Child seat recommendations

Awesome, thank you slowmover, and your wife for that info.

We are looking into a convertable seat. My wife is adamant that our daughter will be in a rear facing seat as long as possible. Which I understand. Boosters are out for now. we are looking at the cosco scenera. Whatever we choose, it'll be also used for cars some of the time as well.

Re: Child seat recommendations

I am from Norway in Europe, and I find it amusing that even child seats in the US has cupholders!

Following this with interest, I might bring my 5 yo. up with me for the first time this summer. I was not sure if I would use a booster seat of the full size. I am. Not sure the latter can secure both shoulder and waist belts in the harness.

Re: Child seat recommendations

We ended up choosing the Cosco scenera convertable car seat. About 10 lbs. We only tried it in the car so far, but daughter didnt mind it a bit. hoping to try it in the wagon soon

We had some of those too when the kids were smaller, before going to the Finale.

Price is right, weight is good for flying, simple design that’s easy to clean.

Exactly! Looked at the Finale as well. we will go that route when she is bigger. Right now, still facing rear was the big thing.

Re: Child seat recommendations

I've been using the Cosco Scenera Next for my little one, and it's been great. It's lightweight and fits well in smaller spaces like jump seats. It's also affordable and FAA-approved, which is a plus for flying. It should work nicely in your Citabria. Anyone else have recommendations for compact car seats that fit well in smaller aircraft?
