Colorado Airport Camping?
A general forum for anything related to flying the backcountry. Please check first if your new topic fits better into a more specific forum before posting.
I am seeking input as to what public Co. airports might make for the best candidates for improvements to make them most appealing to fly-in campers. My very early research has found the POSSIBILITY of some funding for this through the Colorado Lottery. There would be a lot of bureaucratic "Hoop Jumping" and a bit of private fundraising to pull something like this off, but it seems like it might be a worthwhile, and maybe fun project.
I would like to hear some ideas concerning this. Possible places, what facilities would be preferred, other suggestions. I can't imagine Colorado would ever have something approaching what can be found in Idaho or Montana, but it might be a start toward something fun and enjoyable.
Thanks, Wes

Digging up an old thread that initially went ignored.
I'll be passing through Colorado from Flagstaff around the 20th and am looking for info on any good back country strips that have camping available. I know that Colorado is no Idaho when it comes to backcountry flying, but can anyone recommend any good public use strips up in the Rockies?

A few more good CO backcountry options since 10 years ago.
Marble is a great choice for primitive camping (prior permission required).
Hooper is a good overnight stay with facilities and a campground. It is catered more to the RV crowd though.
La Garita Creek Ranch could probably help you out too. (prior permission required).
All of these are private airstrips. If you're looking for a overnight stop at a public strip, there's a few in the area, but flying a 180 there's better options imo.
FlyColorado.org is a good place for additional info.

Two great placed to camp: Morning Shadows Ranch (CD69) and La Garita Ranch (5CO6).
Also the Sand Dunes Pool. No FAA id. They have campgrounds, hot springs pool and great food. 2500 foot dirt strip.
Del Norte (KRCV) and Creede (C24) allow camping on the field.
All located in South Central Colorado in the San Luis Valley.
Flycolorado.org has some great info as well.
100LL at KRCV and a ride to town if you need it.
Call if you need anything (719) eight five zero 1411

KANK Salida also has a camping area on the field that's generally pretty underused. Obviously not a backcountry strip but a nice place for an overnight.

Dolores Point is a good one, it's in far western Colorado.
