Colorado Camping

I want to do a some fling in Colorado this summer. I know I am probably spoiled by Idaho camping but are there and good camping spots on the eastern slope of the Rockies.

Re: Colorado Camping

Delores Point is the only one that comes to mind. Then there's Marble and Lagarita which you would need permission for both. I'm sure some of the Colorado guys will chime in.

Re: Colorado Camping

www.flycolorado.org has some great info.
While not on the East side of the rocks, La Garita Ranch and Morning Shadows are awesome. Sand Dunes Pool offers camping as well.
Morning Shadows is not detailed on flycolorado.org yet. The owners have said they want to develop it as a fly in B&B.
Dolores Point is one of my favorites, very cool place.

Re: Colorado Camping

As noted, Delores Point and the annual Spring & Fall fly-ins at La Garita ranch are great spots (permission req'd). But there aren't any spots in Colorado that compare to Johnson Creek type (with it's free Wi-Fi, showers, nice grass runway, caretaker, etc). There aren't any spots on the East side of the Continental Divide that I know of that I'd camp at as a destination. Numerous (friendly) private strips, but again none that compare to Idaho. PM me and we can talk/exchange more detail if desired...

Re: Colorado Camping

I can rough anything for a night. wifi and hot shower are nice but not required. And it is not expected. Just a place for a tent. I can even bring my own water.

Re: Colorado Camping

Northwest of Grand Junction just over the border in Utah are a number of strips - take a look on shortfield.com. I don't have personal experience with any of these, but maybe somebody who does will chime in.

Re: Colorado Camping

Not a lot of options on the east side of the Rockies, but as Tom said, there are some options in CO.

What time of year? A lot of snow in the mountains this year and it may take a while to melt. Hooper is snow free at the moment and offers camping at designated spots for a fee.

Re: Colorado Camping

Middle of June hopefully. Even an airport in the flatlands east of the Rockies would work.

Re: Colorado Camping

I've never been into it, but there's a strip near Red Feathers Lakes (north of the Poudre and west of Fort Collins) called Crystal Lakes, 25CO. It looks pretty good for camping and a few years back I heard the owner was trying to organize a fly-in lunch so they may be open to camping if you call ahead. It was for sale so I don't know who owns/maintains it now (if its maintained at all?).

Not in CO but just north in WY there's a turf strip, 76V, next to an RV park and potential camping areas on the west side of Glendo Res. Also Medicine Bow but its probably not as good for camping.
