If you call Enterprise in Sonora (about 15 minutes away) they will come pick you up and rent you a car. Usually they will let you leave the car at the airport with the keys in the drop box when you leave too.

Thanks guys! Looks like Enterprise is going to be the ticket. We are driving up Sonora Pass to stay at my in-laws cabin, but the town of Columbia looks amazing as well.

I just love the scenery down there. Looks like the WX is going to hold out for the McKenzie Bridge get together. I wish I could make it, but only having a 150 available to me for off field operations makes camping impossible.

Oh I know I can do it Zane. Just no chance of taking the spouse. Max gross weight, soft field, higher elevation, all work against you pretty quick. :-)

You guys have fun!

I'm thinking about going camping at Columbia this weekend and I have a couple questions. Are fires allowed? and if so do I need to bring my own wood? Anything else you have to say about Columbia would also be appreciated.

The fabric on those Maule things burns. Just find one there and cut some chunks off for your fire.

Re: Columbia CA O22

Bring you own wood. Also, bring an air mattress. The ground in the campground is slightly harder than the asphalt you will be landing on (unless you land on the dirt strip.) Take the nature trail into town. If you haven't been there it's a state park that has preserved a gold rush era mining town. Stage coach rides, gold panning, museums, shopping, living history exhibits, lots of eats. There's a B&B in town too. You'll enjoy yourself.

If I wasn't occupied with my wife tomorrow I'd fly up and say hello. I'm based out of Oakdale, about a 15 minute flight down into the flatlands from Columbia.

Re: Columbia CA O22

Interesting that some of you have mentioned fire rings, bring your own wood, etc. There are no fires allowed that I could tell, other than the barbeques. No fire rings at any of the campsites that I saw in the few times we camped there. Is there a common fire ring up near the clubhouse/bathrooms that I missed?

Should be a nice weekend to camp there, not too hot. The town is a worthwhile walk, and there are a few places to get dinner as well if you're interested in not roughing it too much.

Re: Columbia CA O22

you know now that i think of it you may be right.... last time I was there we had a rather large fire but I think it was in the bar b que pit... and you won't catch me landing on that paved runway again... when the wind comes from the south or southwest it swirls around the small hill at the north end on the west side of the runway giving you a nice tailwind at touchdown..If I had to land to the south i'd land long if it's windy..or just use the grass east/west strip.

Re: Columbia CA O22

Thanks for the replies guys, so it sounds like you can have a fire, but only in the bbq pits? We should be getting there later today sometime, if anyones in the area stop by and say hi.
