Columbia, CA (O22) Overnight 5/16-5/17

A friend and I were thinking about doing some camping at Columbia (O22) next weekend - either Friday or Saturday night (May 16th or 17th) and was wondering if anyone else would be interested in joining in.

He's got a 150 Heavy :D and I have a Citabria 7GCBC.

Anyone up for it?

Chris, I believe that the Luscombe fly in is scheduled for that same weekend on the 17th. Me and a buddy were thinking about flyin the Cubs over, but might be a little crowded.

Georgetown is usually empty, paved, but a cool place to go with a firepit chances are you will be the only ones there. :-$

I second Georgetown. I have been know to go up there for a quick evening campfire with the family. Never seen another soul.

Sticknrudder- where is that shot of you on a dirt strip by a lake? I think I fly over that one alot and have always wondered about it.

buzzlatka,

It's directly east of Mt. Hamilton. before you get into the Central valley. It's south of the old DC-3 strip/mine. My instructor used to know one of the owners, but unfortunately, he just passed away.

I have some pictures from a couple of years ago when JMTGT and I flew in to check out the campground.

Y'all mind the locals there at G-town. The ones that work at the airport are as nice as can be and honest to a fault, as are a lot of other people who live up there. But the town is a haven for dirt-bags...many of them tweekers, some of them pretty hard core. White trash is a pretty apt description. The airport use to be a popular place for them to hang out, but since the fence went up it's not so much of a problem.

If someone is around you can get the airport car (if it's running) for a trip into town, but you have to be back before they leave, as the gate will be locked. The Georgetown Hotel is a colorful place to have a sandwich and a beer, but I'd strongly advise NOT being in town on a Friday or Saturday night unless you're used to a certain level of rowdiness...and not always the friendly kind. It's not always bad by any means, but depending on who just got out of jail or who just got their welfare check, the mood can be volatile.

Georgetown is a unique place with a distinctive frontier town feel to it. It's very unlike California in general, which is a good thing. But folks there are very clannish, and lots of them adhere to a different standard of conduct than most of us are used to. If you have a problem there, it's going to be up to you to deal with it on your own.

Again, since the airport fence went up the airport campground has become a MUCH nicer place to be, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for anyone looking for a nice place to hang out for a night. The black lab who comes into your camp is named Rudder. Just keep in mind you're entering a different world, both good and bad.

It is better to be late in this world, than early in the next.
