Cool New Movie Trailer for "Sully"; Clint Eastwood Director

I think anyone who flies will enjoy this upcoming film directed by Clint Eastwood. In theaters September 2016. It is about the " Miracle on the Hudson". Tom Hanks stars as Sullenberger. From Apollo 13 to the AirBus 320 going into the drink, Hanks sure is logging a lot of time.

It is interesting because director Eastwood is a pilot as well, and I believe is really into helicopters.

I didn't realize he underwent such scrutiny for the decision. Is that true? Or are they making a movie to overdramatize it?

Both Eastwood and Hanks are terrific at their jobs. Pretty much every thing either of them touches turns out well.

My understanding is that initially there was a lot of scrutiny.

Anyone read Sully's book? Currious how the facts stack up too. Might have to add it to my short list for reading.

Energy management turn to near obstruction free area; I have no problem with that. His boss? Not compliant, just smart and effective. I don't think they go for that. Good press may have saved him from being fired shortly before mandatory retirement. What is the title of the book?

I remember Jeff Skiles being critized in the press for not completing the ditching checklist. Apparently, had he gotten it completed, the fuselage would not have filled with water quite as quickly.

remember, he initially started down the "dual engine failure checklist", then switched to the water landing checklist. Only later to be slammed by the media.

Joe is right, there was quite a bit of initial scrutiny of the crew. I was surprise to learn most of it came from the airline, though. There was all the expected NTSB stuff, but early on the airline was trying to set itself up in a way it could distance itself from the flight crew in case they were found at fault. This was very early on, before they ran it through the simulator, before they pulled the engines out of the water. Until they knew for sure that the crew had no other options, the airline was prepared to hang them out to dry. At least that is my understanding from someone fairly close to the incident.

The Airbus has a ditching switch on the overhead that closes various avionics and pack doors which will be below water level in the event of a ditching. Everybody survived. Screw the naysayers.

The simulator stuff was done in our VX sim in Burlingame, CA.

The ditching switch wouldn't have mattered much anyway, as the lower rear fuselage was compromised when they hit the water.

Jeff Skiles is a huge GA advocate and owns a 185. He's also a fantastic writer.

Of note, he was very new on the 320. Was still on high mins if I recall (less than 100 hours in type).
