Re: Cool Pic - Stinson

That Stinson looks almost identical to the one I flew in ‘12 when we were in Port Alsworth.
Seth Kroenke with Alaska’s River Wild has a badass bird but his is black and silver.
Has plexi doors and 35s. We had an entire 10 day bear camp and three guys crammed into that thing.
That was the plane and trip that pushed me to get my ppl.

Formandfunction - There are supposed to be 2 notches, I believe one at 26-28* and the other at 30-32*. I'll clarify those numbers when I get back in town.

My plane has four notches and maxed out at 40.
I had it all pulled apart and inspected but couldn't find any evidence of modification.
I also found it hard to three point will full flaps and a light load.
Even with the flaps at 40 the plane wouldn't
Land any slower because the tail stalls before the wing producing a mush instead of a stall. All that was made worse with a larger set of tires raising the nose even further. I finally put vg's on the plane and although I doubt the ones on the wing are actually doing alot the ones on the tail transformed the plane. I had to learn how to fly it all over again.

Re: Cool Pic - Stinson

Speaking of Stinson 108s...
I was looking at a stripped 108-3 a few years ago, & discovered it had a stop built into the flap linkage (below the cabin floor) which prevented full elevator travel unless the flaps were deployed. In other words, you got more up elevator with flaps down. This was a standard feature, yet I'd never heard of it before.

I’ve yet to fly one but I’d always been enamored with Stinsons especially after seeing MountainMatts old one. There is a 108 near by that a tried to buy a few years ago. The owner is now ready to sell it and the hangar it is in. This thread goes on much longer and I might not be able to resist the temptation.

How many notches are the flaps supposed to have? Mine has four at ten degrees a notch. My books say 30 degrees and two notches.

Mine has three notches and I agree that the factory came with two.

Re: Cool Pic - Stinson

I ferried one recently. It had three notches. Placarded for one notch on takeoff, two notches for normal landing.
Elevator travel was very limited in the up direction until the first notch of flaps was in.

My reading says that was the factory design. A protrusion in the flap handle pivot point blocks a part of the elevator push-pull tube which runs just below it until the that first notch.

The one I flew was a metalized 150hp Franklin. I didn't hate it.

Is it possible the flap positions changed between the -1, -2, and -3 models? Are we comparing same variety apples?

No, flap positions are the same from the straight 108 through the -5. It's just that some people think they need an extra notch, so they cut one in the ratchet.

The bracket on the push pull tube for the elevator limits the elevator travel until you've got full flaps on. The old Stinson ads bragged that you could pull full back yoke and set up a steep decent without flaps, without stalling.

Re: Cool Pic - Stinson

I had a great -3.

I put 500ish hours on mine before we stuck a 220 frank on the nose. Simply one of the nicest Flying classic designs.
That being said, I always wished for a bunch more flap. Never in a position I thought I had enough to micro manage it. Funny someone would add a third notch.
There are some really cool Voyagers out there. I know -3 with a 0-540 on its nose with a three blade Mac. Another who shares the same mechanic who’s putting it together with the 390 Lyc and a MT.
Best plane to make you look the hero while wheel landing. I had people convinced I knew what I was doing.
Still my wife’s favorite plane.

When I trained on the stinson I was taught a manuver called leafing. It's just full flaps and full back trim causing the plane to basically mush at five to six hundred feet a minute. I guess if you're going into trees that's probably the best way to do it.
I also thought someone drilled my flaps but a full blown inspection showed no signs of drilling or modification. I'm guessing someone changed some parts or the factory installed the arm off a different model. Maybe someone ordered it that way. The plane is so old I will never know it's story.
