Re: Coyotes kill woman!

Coyotes, I hear 'em all the time, but I'm a little more concerned about the mountain line tracks I spotted last week going straight down my runway (100' from the house). I got some real good impressions as I had a stuck sprinkler caused depression I had just thrown some fresh dirt into, and then it rained. They measured 4 1/4" across. Is that big? Seems so to me, and deep also. Right now the baddest thing on the mountain is the sheepherders Great Pyranees (?) guard dog, that beast just escorted me on my mail box run, looking right into my eyes as it ran alongside the little Toyota, I pity that cougar if it messes with him! I wanted to talk with the herder about the big cat, but I'n not current on my Peruvian.

Real Nice prop covers!

Idaho's wolf season is more than half over and there have only been 81 wolves checked in out of a 220 limit. Weather permitting I'd like to fly out into the Idaho back country and shoot one of those "real big coyotes".

Re: Coyotes kill woman!

I just read an article in the Seattle Times about the wolf hunt in Montana, specifically around the Gardiner area north of Jellystone Park. They quoted some wildlife biologists as saying their ability to study a certain wolf pack is gone forever becasue the (radio-collared) alpha male & alpha female were both killed. They admitted that the rest of the pack (number?) were still alive, I guess they don't wanna admit that another male & female will become the pack's new alpha's and that life goes on.
The article said that quite a few wolves were potted early on, as none of them showed any fear of man & so just stood there looking at the hunters until the bullet hit. Later in the season it was tougher sledding, since the remaining wolves ran like hell when they saw people (which is as it should be IMO).
The article didn't come right out against wolf hunting but they were sure sympathetic to that point of view. But they did quote some hunters also, probably as close to impartiality on this subject as we're likely to see.

Speaking of wolves, here's one killed in Idaho. Now that's a scary looking beast.

Holy Smokes!!!

That would scare the hell out of me even with a good rifle! Dang!

I feel a bit sheepish at my pulse being raised by a couple of coyotes this summer.

Whoa!

Re: Coyotes kill woman!

I can't get my wife to campout without other people around. I tell her all the time that the people are the ones you have to worry about. Humans have killed more humans than any animal I can think of  , minus the real little ones (germs). Just my take, I grew up in Baltimore so I have a slanted view. We kill more than one a day in town #-o , but without shock trama, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland Medical center and about a dozen more E.R.'s in town I know the murder rate would be much higher.

I don't know, that picture looks kinda fake to me. :? I'd have to agree with Tom. I always carry a gun with me in the great outdoors, but it's not for the wildlife on 4 legs. It's the one's on 2 legs I'm worried about!

Re: Coyotes kill woman!

On Thursday last week i took my wife and dog deer hunting as i was going to sit in the tree stand,i made a few deer calls and got a answer right away !! I said this looks like it is going to be a good mornning , when all of a sudden from 300 yards away a pack of wolves start up there was at least 5 of them , I gave it a 20 minutes and called again using my bleeper call, this time 1 wolve howles back but he is now 100 yards away , we sat there quietly and within 5 minutes he was 50 yards away only for a slit second I did not have time to shoot him, We where in the tree stand and they had us covered , was not a good feeling but sure was nice to have a full clip in the gun.

Re: Coyotes kill woman!

Gerry, that had to be an unsettling experience. The neighbor said he had seen a wolf twice this fall, that's back was a high as the bottom of the windshield on his Polaris ATV. I have seen a few "killer" coyotes this fall while harvesting here in the southlands, but so far they have not been biting at my 66 inch wide tires. Was pushing an 8 point buck about 100 feet ahead of me yesterday afternoon while cutting corn. That is as close to deer hunting that I have come to so far this season. Hope to be back for the real thing in a couple of weeks. Steve
