Re: Craigslist Scam?

This one in Flagstaff got my attention. It's registered to a guy in Florida who has about 5 phone numbers listed on Switchboard but none of them work. I was going to call him and ask why he was selling his airplane in Flagg.

Re: Craigslist Scam?

I'm not going to say it's not a scam, but there are good reasons why the things that have been noted may be:

1. A photo of a plane can be taken anywhere, they're made to travel and I have photos of mine in several locations. Nothing says your ad photo has to be taken where the aircraft is based.

2. Showing your N-number to everyone on CL reveals your name and home address. Better to wait until the serious buyers email, then call to give that info out.

3. Unlike Trade-a-Plane or Barnstormers, Craigslist is regional, and so if you want to advertise to multiple markets you have to post on each city-based CL site. Generally airplane shopping is a national search, right?

That said, any aircraft for sale can be a scam. Always proceed with caution and do an exhaustive title search/buy title insurance if it's available when and if a deal is struck.

Finally, please don't post ads for aircraft unless you own them. We'll leave this one here for the information/warning.

Re: Craigslist Scam?

Putting a decent airplane for sale on Craig's List is like advertising property in Beverly Hills in the Penny Saver newspaper.

It would never occur to me to look there for an aircraft. Is't Controller and "Barney" free?

Re: Craigslist Scam?

Circumstances of the sale can dictate how aggressive the seller advertises. We had a divorced farmer here years ago who agreed to liquidate half his machinery in order to give that half to the ex wife. He did not want to get the most out of it for her and advertised it by parking it along the road with a cardboard for sale sign only neighbors would see. They all knew the story and some of it still sits there... more than 10 years later.

I bid on a Six Chuter PPC on Ebay back in 2000. Owner listed in Florida but the Chute was in Colorado within a hard day's drive of me. It had a guarantee of satisfaction on condition. I won the bid and contacted the woman in Florida who gave me the Colorado number to call to arrange for inspection and pick up. Her ex answered and said "That bitch did what? Sold my Chuter?" NO ****** WAY! and told me where I could go. I contacted Ebay and they agreed to cancel all actions and obligations concerning the sale.

Re: Craigslist Scam?

Funny how this same airplane keeps popping up in these threads. This same exact plane and it IS A SCAM, was discussed a few weeks ago on this very site. As I said then, everyone is looking for that "DEAL" that they can brag about to their friends about how cheap they got a particular plane. Funny how you never hear from the guys that got scammed out of thousands of hard earned dollars.

Found one of the other threads when I did a search on SCAM.

I would have gone one step further instead of just calling EBay to reverse the sale... I would have called the local DA and if it turned out the EX had no legal right to sell the plane, have the bitch charged with attemped fraud, wire fraud and any other charge that would stick..... [-o<

Re: Craigslist Scam?

By the way, that's not a 53. The 53 had the wing vent inlets right on the wing root. They set them out of the prop flow by 56 (which is what I have). I can't remember whether they did that in 55 or 56. Definitely not on a 53, though unless somebody went to a lot of trouble to retrofit.

Alalskans seem to like using CL for airplane sales. I wish more airplanes were advertised on CL. I have found some awesome deals on that sight. I never buy an expensive tool (or anything else I don't mind buying used) until I look on CL first.

It is a scammers paradise though and you need to know how to spot a scam. When you are selling something, you usually get emails that make no reference specifically to what you are selling. They refer to it as an item (is your item still for sale on CL?). Usually there is some unusual circumstance sited for needing it shipped like I just moved or I'm in the mil. Just delete and move on. When you are buying, you will easily see the difference between legit ads and scams if you look at CL enough. Just be sceptical of anything that looks too good to be true.

We put up ads in several places including Barnstormers and craigslist. In our case, it was thr craigslist ad that sold the airplane.

Re: Craigslist Scam?

My wife does NOT want me shopping/selling on CL, because she doesn't want me beat-up, raped, shot, or scammed.

So I stopped using it... But, never say never.
