The developer went bankrupt and the lots were auctioned off. The new owners (or managers) of the strip tightened the clamps harder than ever. I got a very "clear" voicemail that private meant private for owners only.

Enough of a hassle that we just fly to Gunnison.


*A little caveat is that friends of ours did actually buy one of the lots. We are hoping to visit them in a few weeks. If anything changes I'll post on here again. There is a lot of paperwork to fill out even if you are flying to visit a friend or family member who lives on the field.

Well that REALLY sucks seeing how we just got our 185 and one of the things I was looking forward to was that exact field. My family has a cabin up washington gulch and I spend quite a bit of time in CB. I fish the East river and pass the strip ALL the time. I cant say it is going to happen but it sure will be nice to bag that strip at least once! I have been looking at it since 1985 the first time I was in CB.

The runway is PRIVATE and the local adjacent landowners in the Airpark pay for and maintain the runway through their HOA fees.

The Airstrip is found on aviation maps and designated with an “R” for RESTRICTED. Pilots could have their license restricted and pay expensive fines as a result of landing without approval. The FAA and the Crested Butte Airpark have and will enforce fines. One plane landed last year but was not permitted it to take-off again, and the plane subsequently had to be disassembled and put on a truck.

Guests are permitted to use the runway if they:

Have prior approval and proof of insurance
Have appropriate training and they must pass a test to ensure safety of high-altitude landing / taking off on the short runway
Submit aircraft information including their aircraft tail number

Landed at Gunnison with a DA of 10,200 after 7 hrs from Joseph Oregon (which is a cool town). 18 gusting 24 straight down 35. Nice FBO tie downs $10 night.

Had an awesome visit with friends on Crested Butte.
