Cross Winds C72 - Clayton, WA

Do any of you Spokane are guys know the status of "Cross Winds" airport near Deer Park? I was in the area hunting and visiting family last week and thought it would be handy to fly into as I have family nearby. The strip is charted as "Private-open to the public", however there doesn't seem to be much recent activity. The hanger appears to have been the victim of too much snow and the windsock is hanging in tatters.

Is it closed and was never removed from the data base or charts?

Don't know if open or not, probably get the # out of the supplement or off a chart. Deer Park is just a couple of miles away and has tie downs, phone, computer, nice pilots lounge, courtesy car and 2 runways.

www.airnav.com is a good resoiurce for information on specific airports. Or to find all the FAA-registered (charted or not) airports in an area.

Ya I tried calling the number in airnav before I posted, but no luck. Was just looking for some local knowledge, as these small grass strips scattered everywhere seem to have interesting stories.

Sounds like deer park is a better option though

There's a website called Lost Airports of Washington ( www.lostairports.com ). The site developer has spent quite a bit of time identifying old, abandoned, little-known, and/or uncharted airstrips and compiled information on them. He's from Seattle, so there seems to be more info about strips in western washington than eastern, but it's a fun site to surf. Unfortunately Crosswinds isn't one of the featured airstrips, but there are a couple nearby.

Thanks! I will have to keep that in mind. Rice is located about 10 miles up the river from Gifford right?
