Crossing the pond for HSF 2015!!!

Well I'm super excited to tell everyone that I'm crossing the pong this year in October and going to the High sierra fly in! I can not tell you how excited I am! But even though this is a short trip Im hoping to catch up with anyone I can! to me this is a half BCP trip an a half keep the wife happy trip!

I will have travel dates confirmed within the next few days but so far the pan is get in on the 20th of october, have a day to sort of rest, get over jet lag, sort out the car and learn how to drive on the wrong side of the road, then I have 2 days to make myself to Reno where I will drop off my wife and her friend and head for 3SGS. After the fly in I am planning on making my way to Oregon area. Then my wife and her friend want to stay do see what the halloween you guys love is all about. Then either drive or fly back to LA to fly home on the evening on the 2nd of september.

I would love to get any advice from you guys want to give me. Who might want to say Gday. Is there anyone out there who may be keen to show us around for Halloween and help us try and avoid the whole stabbing in a dark alley thing. I would love it if anyone could give me some good ideas for what my Wife and her mate could get up to around reno/tahoe while I'm playing aeroplanes.

On a side Note I was wondering who about may be looking at going to the HSF, and while its a very big ask I know, I was wondering if anyone may be interested in allowing me to throw in fuel and be a passenger with them at the fly in. it would be amazing if I could do some flying there as oppose to just watching everyone come and go. Though my real purpose for being there is to meet as many of you as I can so it will still all be worth it if I cant pull that off.

anyway enough for now, cant wait to hear your thoughts!

Very cool! I'm sure you'll not have a hard time finding someone to give you a ride. And I'm sure some guys that can do some of the more gnarly stuff will offer you a ride. If not, you're more than welcome to hitch a ride with me!

I'm hoping to attend HSF this year since I'm missing NBAW and Oshkosh. I'd love to offer you a lift but I have no room in the J3 for pax.

You aren't bringing any of that Bundaburg Rum with you are you?

If I go to HSF this year I'll most likely be flying by myself (haven't missed one yet, and probably won't miss this one either). If that's the case, I'd be happy to give you a ride with me in the 170. I could pick you up in the Reno area , or you could fly with me from Rio Vista (O88) if you can find a way down there.

Re: Crossing the pond for HSF 2015!!!

You guys are all legends! I will keep you all up to date with my plans! but I cant tell you how much I'm looking forward to the fly in and meeting everyone!

the thing I'm trying to work out at the moment bar my travel dates is camping at 3SGS. I was told you can hire camping gear in the states, but I'm am also thinking of an RV for the weekend as it comes equipped and ready to go. But if I where to hire gear, has anyone thats looking at coming got a spare tent and sleeping bag? I figure I if was going to give cash to someone for it it may aswell be someone who can use it for fuel in there plane!

Re: Crossing the pond for HSF 2015!!!

anyone know the sierra nevada mountains very well. Ive been looking over maps and my wife would like to head to Las Vegas this trip, I thought maybe a drive through the mountains north to south may be a nice thing to do? I was wondering if anyone could suggest a nice route?

also whats the chances of being able to see snow in those mountains toward the end of october?

Re: Crossing the pond for HSF 2015!!!

If headed south from Tahoe area to Vegas Hwy 395 is very scenic and will have you looking at the southern sierras most of your trip . Very beautiful area . Probably one of the most jaw dropping drives around .

Re: Crossing the pond for HSF 2015!!!

thanks mate! is Yosemite national park something you could drive through on the way by, or is that really a trip in itself, I only have a few days to make it from lake Tahoe to Las Vegas. was also hoping to drive through death valley on the way. But I'm thinking I may be getting a bit ambitious here

Re: Crossing the pond for HSF 2015!!!

The best and quickest way is to overfly Yosemite. It's a long drive otherwise and always very crowded. Someone on here might offer. I'm too Far East of route or I'd be happy to.

Re: Crossing the pond for HSF 2015!!!

Yosemite is on the way south and should not be missed but that is definitely a trip in itself. As far as seeing snow in October goes there might be some patches of it left over from the previous winter up really high on the peaks or you also have the possibility of an early full on snowstorm letting you get a taste of the fresh stuff . October can be really nice and warm one day with the next looking like a winter wonderland . Very nice time of year to be around these parts for certain .I also have a truck you could roam around in if you need a vehicle while you are in these parts ..

Re: Crossing the pond for HSF 2015!!!

that's a lot of driving - this is a big country - but all doable. October should be nice in the sierras but it can always snow - especially up high

+1 to see if you can get a flight over Yosemite - spectacular in a plane - but also nice on foot. Imagine there's another one under that huge lake to the north called Hetch Hetchy
