ELBERT COUNTY, Colo. -- A pilot and passenger were both killed when their plane crashed in Elbert County Saturday. FAA spokesman Mike Fergus said the Cub Crafters plane came down shortly before 3 p.m. near Rocky Mountain Airpark. He did not know whether the plane had been taking off or landing. Fergus said the tail number of the plane was 143FJ. According to a search of FAA records, the aircraft was registered to the plane’s manufacturer, Cub Crafters Inc. out of Yakima, Washington. It was listed as model C11-160, a fixed wing, single-engine plane. The FAA was working with the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the crash. The identity of the victims was not immediately available.

ELBERT COUNTY - The Federal Aviation Administration says a small plane has crashed east of Parker, killing the two people on board. According to the FAA, the two people on board the small single engine cub crafter plane died. Witnesses at the Rocky Mountain Airpark, a residential area with a runway cutting through it, say the yellow plane crashed near the runway around 3:30 p.m. Witnesses say the plane was coming into the airstrip and started to corkscrew towards the ground before it crashed. Neighbors at the airpark say when the plane crashed, people ran out of their homes to help. Residents say the private airstrip is only supposed to be used by people who live in the neighborhood, but sometimes other planes do land there. That was my thought when I read it on Supercub.org earlier.

Even if you are a skillful pilot or own a very capable aircraft, be careful to not let complacency set in.

Its a Very sad day for all who knew Pete Vinton.
He and a passenger died in a cub at the airpark Pete developed.
He was about first in his Navy aviation class, flew F-16's to 777's
I had hoped to visit him on the way to Caveman.
I don't understand how we are loosing so many of the best.
RIP Pete.

Pete was a great guy and an exceptional pilot. I am so sad for his family.

He taught me to fly tailwheel and introduced me to the real fun of flying. He was an excellent teacher because he actually let you fly with out taking control every 2 seconds. His natural confidence and enthusiasm was infectious. I will miss him.

Re: cub crafter plane down @ rocky mtn airpark

Pete was one of a kind and one heck of a nice guy, wouldn't want to guess how many planes he was type rated in. I knew him for a number of years. Tossed down more than a few BUDs with him around different flyin's and at his annual BBQ at his airpark and at the Reno Air Races. Sure going to miss him. Services are this Saturday in Mullen, Nebraska and he will be buried next to his dad. RIP Pete.

FLYING magazine, April 2012, has an article on this accident. It's written by Peter Garrison in "Aftermath", pg 34 entitled, "Too Low, Too Slow."

Lessons to be learned here ...

RIP Pete.

RIP.... And of course sympathies and prayers for the always devastated loved ones.

There is an old saying......

"Cubs fly just fast enough to kill you".......

I expect it was coined about the original J-3.
And it is partially meant as as a warning, I do believe.
Applies to other faster Cubs in spades.

Probably "Just high enough" should fit in there, too.

Damn shame!

Thanks for the update......

Humor may not make the world go around, but it certainly cheers up the process... :)
With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).
Success has many fathers...... Failure is an orphan.

Re: cub crafter plane down @ rocky mtn airpark

What a sobering article. Gave me pause, the handling and climb on the carbon cub really tempts me to do maneuvers that I never even consider in other types.
A well written piece, rest in peace Pete.
