Pair reportedly are uninjured after small plane's crash

A Piper Cub two-seat plane flipped over just after noon Sunday while trying to land on a Willamette River gravel bar near San Salvadore County Park west of St. Paul, Oregon State Police reports show.

The plane's owner, Laurence Holman, 77, of Canby, and his passenger, Joan Marshall, 64, from Estacada, reportedly were not injured in the crash.

A second plane landed on the gravel bar to assist Marshall and Holman.

Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife troopers Adam Turnbo and Todd Hoodenpyl were on boat patrol when they came across the crash scene.

they were 64 and 77 years old on little tires. hiiiiighly doubtful it was anything that edgy. aside from the fact that insurance on super cubs will increase it's cool the old coots were shreddin' it up to whatever level though!

Larry Holman was attempting to land to the West on the bar at Yamhill Landing. This edge of this bar slopes into the water quite steeply here and may have been a factor. Larry is a retired Ag pilot with thousands of hours in Super Cubs. It was unfortunate the State Police happened along because otherwise this would have been an obscure filing with the FAA and not have made the local news.


The second photo shows the results of another pilot's botched go around that occurred a year ago in the same location. That one never made the news at all. No injuries except to the pilots pride and wallet in either case.

I tried to find this out. I know that quite a few pilots are doing it. I looked all through the stuff online that the state aeronautics folks have on-line. I found the verbaige that says you can't land on the beaches. They are very specific about that, but I couldn't find anything that says you can't land on the river bars. I did find stuff to support the notion that the state owns all the river bank below high water. I called the state aero folks in salem, and the young thing on the other end of the line had no clue.

Bottom line: I land on the bars if I please, and I'll plead ignorance if someone calls me on it. 'course I run with N number BR549 when I'm doing stuff like that.

Ya know, I'd have had to say that was a Cub phenomena, But since someone just wrecked a perfectly good 150 for the same reason last week... I guess stupidity isn't aircraft specific after all.
