I'm assuming the AOPA meant to say PA-18 Super Cubs and not "PA-28 Super Cubs" in the article.

That's the low-wing all-metal 4 seat version, otherwise known as the tin indian.

Re: Cub lands in 69 feet!

I am thinking about replacing my stock gear with the CC 3x3 extended gear on my SC. Anyone have any positive or negative thoughts you can share with me before I make the jump. Thanks.

Re: Cub lands in 69 feet!

Mush has recently added the CC 3x3 gear and he really likes it. I guess the added width is more noticeable than the height, the only thing negative thing he said is you can't see much over the nose (with 31's).

PM Mush if you get a second.

My mechanic is in the process of putting the CC 3X3 gear and AOSS system on my Husky. I should be testing it by the middle of the week. The gear is from Airframes Alaska. (But I don't think that I will be able to land in 69 feet unless it is going up the top of a mountain.)

Cool. Would enjoy hearing how you like the new set up.

Re: Cub lands in 69 feet!

Caution, minor thread drift:
I landed this site the other day, at 5600', no wind, and on grass with minor braking . It measured 75' from tail touchdown to stopped. I have been working on landing this site from a 90 degree turn on final, this vid shows it at about 120 degree final. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vWj-PWENbc
I was all lined up to land it from a 90, and at the last second just landed it straight on across the grass, which measures 120' from the boulders to the tree line (yeah I measured it with a hundred foot tape). I used my new 3" taller gear to best advantage! The AOA on final was very high.... I only have single puck brakes and can't go with double puck as they would complicate my wheel ski setup, besides I don't need ANY brakes all winter! The two landings I made there last week were my most rewarding of the year, as in WHOAAAA, can't believe I pulled that off!!! I thought I had the camera on, but did not, now it is bugging me and I have to get back up there with the camera ON this time before the sheep and the Great Pyrenees guard dogs take up residence, they greatly complicate things  If I had the dough I'd be in a CC, but have to make do with my S-7S #-o Image This landing requires coming in aimed straight at the trees in back, with the gear in between the two big lava boulders right before touchdown and with the right wing tip close to the tree in front, the only good thing about it: it is a 1/4 mile from my shop so don't have far to haul the wreckage  Tall gear: good. Extended forward: not needed so much unless your on pavement and have super brakes

Re: Cub lands in 69 feet!

Nice video. I am surprised that most of the people who I am talking with or getting PM's from are recommending that I go with the standard extended gear instead of the 3" forward model. Cheaper too it appears. Looks like I may go that direction. I truly appreciate all of the input I have been getting. Thanks.

OK, so now I'm REALLY jealous of your backyard and the flying you get to do!

The 25 knot wind is also a big help... :D

Re: Cub lands in 69 feet!

I think he bent his gear with that landing also, a little hard on equipment that was never designed for a drop like that.

Re: Cub lands in 69 feet!

Cool vid, I would hope that little bounce didn't bend the gear, I wouldn't think so. I slammed mine also, for the same reason: the tail wheel making contact first . I had 4 lbs of air in the Airstreaks so between it and the new gear it was just a bit harder then a regular landing. Gotta love that fine control at that AOA, the firm arrival is a small price to pay for the low speeds involved. It'd be damn hard to get hurt going that slow also!

I'll keep any comments about extended gear specifically to the Rans S-7S, which was my intent. It, or at least mine, with skis on several months of the year, would benefit little or not at all by extending the gear forward. I also like my tail weight (as in when I have to pick it up and lift it over sage brush or whatever) just the weigh (sorry) it is. Just because the Cub guys are doing it doesn't make it an across the board similar advantage for other designs is my only point. From what I hear if I had a CC or a SC I'd for sure go for the 3x3, seems like a perfect match. Hell, now I want slats.......

Re: Cub lands in 69 feet!

Mauleguy-

After watching and re-watching the video a few times, did he bend the pilots side gear leg?

You also get the Oh Shit from the camera man and the pilot is waving his arms in the cockpit as if he is done or does not want it filmed anymore...

Looks as though he did maybe bend it...hmmm.....now I am curious

Re: Cub lands in 69 feet!

If they're going to do that kind of arrival, from that height (main wheel above ground), they better start paying attention to the history books. There were several airplanes designed to do that kind of flying, with those kinds of impacts, from those altitudes... and they all had some kind of a long stroke landing gear which was designed for that kind of flying.

I just cannot be the only student of aircraft history here, or the only one who is familiar with the long throw landing gears of the Porter, the Storch, and the many carrier based aircraft with trailing link landing gear !

They're getting the deck angles so high on these airplanes now, that the basic landing gear design for an unflapped, underpowered, 1000 pound, 40HP airplane in 1934 is past its !)#(*% limit. It's been almost 80 years you Cub guys, for chrissakes let old C.G. rest in peace and come up with something that's suited for how hard you're flogging these poor Cubs today!
